i'm amy goodman. amy goodman: we spend today's hour looking at the bloody struggle to obtain-and protect- voting rights in this country. since 2010, at least 10 states have passed laws that require people to show a government- issued photo id when they go to the polls. while supporters say the laws protect against voter fraud, others argue they're more likely to suppress voter turnout among people of color, the poor and proper id and find it harder to obtain one. in total, 16 states have passed restrictive voting laws that could shape the 2012 election, including the vital swing states of florida and pennsylvania. well, on monday, naacp president and ceo ben jealous made voting rights the center of his address to the group's annual convention in houston. >> we have a choice to make. we can allow this election to be stolen in advance, as politicians from pennsylvania and recently bragged about money thought no one was listening. talking about his state's voter id law. we can double down on democracy. a

so what happened here, amy?wish that 9/11 were not an occasion for campaigning, but as steve hayes reported in the weekly standard, the obama campaign actually was in full gear. david axelrod was tweeting. bill clinton gave a speech campaigning against mitt romney on 9/11. we saw that the romney campaign and the obama campaign set aside negative ads but the campaign continued on. as for mitt romney making a statement in reaction to the u.s. embassy statement, i would have liked to see him take some time to gather more facts so that he could have a fuller critique of president obama's foreign policy. i think that would have been more wise. but i think the focus on mitt romney here is completely misplaced. for the media to be focusing on mitt romney, whether or not he looked presidential instead of the man who actually occupies 1600 pennsylvania avenue, i think this week we have seen that the administration's media policy is basically completely -- was a complete debacle from beginning to end, starting with the ca

i'm amy goodman. the u.s. ambassador to libya and three embassy staffers have been killed in an attack on the u.s. consulate in the libyan city of benghazi. christopher stevens and three aides died of smoke inhalation after an angry mob set fire to the building in protest of an amateur anti-muslim film produced in the united states. the film also sparked protests in egypt, where demonstrators scaled a wall of u.s. embassy in cairo and burnt the american flag. the film called "in a sense of muslims," was funded by private donors and made by director who's called islam a cancer. we will have more on this story after headlines. the white house is denying reports president obama has snubbed israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu by refusing a meeting with netanyahu -- when netanyahu visits washington next week. the reported rift is said to center around u.s.-israeli tensions over iran, with netanyahu continuing to push for a military attack. on tuesday, he escalated his rhetoric say no one in the world
