our athena jones is traveling with the president there in boulder, colorado. let's talk about that youth vote. we are talking about a rally constituted mostly of young people. it was very pivotal in 2004. will it be just as vital this year? >> reporter: well the campaign certainly thinks so. fire officials put this crowd at 13,000. yesterday a crowd of 10,000 in iowa. what you just mentioned is going to be very important. this event people started lining up very early this morning. all along that line people going along telling people how to get registered and make sure that they are registered and make sure they can vote early. colorado is an early voting state. much of what we heard from the president is very similar from yesterday in iowa. he spent a lot of time rebutting the republicans at the convention. one thing he did at the top of this speech that is interesting is he said they put together a challenge, challenging the folks at colorado state university not that far from here, challenging each school to see how many people they can get registered to v

good morning, athena. >> good morning. well guys as you know this congress isn't really known for getting a whole lot done. and as you mentioned, the only must-pass legislation is a short term spending measure to fund the government through the end of the year. that has to get to the president's desk by the end of this month. and we can say with almost certainty that's going to happen. the house is expected to vote on that bill on thursday and we're told the senate will get to it next week. but beyond that, it's really a big question mark. a lot of things that they might pass or could past. one of those things is the farm bill. there's still some division, some differences between the house version and the senate version. if they can reconcile those they can get that passed. if they can't we might see some drought assistance and aid to people hit hard by hurricane isaac. get put into that spending measure. but you know the fact that they haven't been able to get a whole lot done probably plays in to what their poll ratings

athena, thanks very much. a little deeper with ron brownstein, the editorial director of the national journal. he's heading from iowa, will be in ohio, colorado, heading to louisiana, to see what's going on as a result of hurricane isaac. with the exception of louisiana, these other states are really important. >> and it really embodies what is the new strategic dynamic in presidential politics. there are now two sets of swing states that can bring you to 270 in the electoral college majority. historically, it was those monsters of the midway in the midwest. you've got iowa and ohio, and michigan and pennsylvania and wisconsin, that were kind of the tipping points of american politics. but now there's a second group of swing states across the sun belt, states that by changing demography have been brought to within reach of democrats. so the president's itinerary really reflects kind of the changing strategic dynamics and the two paths that they're simultaneously pursuing. >> louisiana is a critically important
