cnbc's kayla tausche joins me now.he group's momentum has largely fizzled if you look at the indicators. what's the state of the movement today? >> reporter: well, they've certainly reconvened, at least for one day, richard. and by the looks of things today, familiar sights and sounds for residents and employees here in lower manhattan. the occupy wall street movement really celebrating that first birthday by turning lower manhattan into a hotbed. instead of the original zuccotti park location, they're using twitter to localize clusters of protesters all around lower manhattan instead of just in one place. what that's led to is a bevy of protests. organizers say between 70 and 100 arrests have taken place. so far, it's a day-long movement and it actually started on saturday. but they're message still isn't clear. foreclosures, bank bailouts, some pressing for the independence of puerto rico and regulating the art market. but you will see responses from both the campaigns of governor romney and president obama targeting

kayla tausche has the latest. >> reporter: well, simon, midday here in lower manhattan, it is quieting down, thinning out and protests are spreading farther afield. a lunch time meeting brought all the protests across this area of town back to the birthplace of the movement just a couple blocks north of where i am right now. that was serving to help them regroup a little bit but now they're heading out again, some back down to water street, others over to world financial center. some also back to bowling green where there was a movement at around 11:00 a.m. with about 1,000 people. as they spread out these protests are thinning a little bit leading police to be able to arrest people a little easier. i'm told that there are roughly 100 arrests so far today and it is unclear how many more there will be. we do see the police forces also thinning out as more arrests are made and more protests wind down a little bit. but certainly a lot of momentum early on in the day for this birthday, so to speak, for the occupy wall street movement. perhaps it's most lasting impression though is the rhet
