rebecca jarvis is here. what do the numbers tell us about how the i come is doing? >> the numbers tell us that the economy is creating fewer jobs than expected. in august, the economy added 96,000 new jobs. that was short of analyst forecasts, and the unemployment rate did drop from 8.3% from 8.1%, but it was not because of the new jobs. instead, unemployment fell because the labor force and participation in it shrank for the month. if you're not actively seeking work, you are not counted in the official jobless statistics. there are now 12.5 million unemployed americans. 5 million or 40% of them have been out of work for six months or more. so far this year the economy has created an average of 139,000 jobs a month. last year the number was slightly higher at 153,000 jobs. you need about 150,000 jobs a month just to keep up with population growth. and a number that economists would consider healthy would be more in the range of 200,000 jobs. so where were the jobs created in august? well the service sector gained jobs while manufacturing, which has been a stronger
