john harwood? >> governor engler, i just want to ask you about two economic issues. one national and one of home state importance to you. one is, we got a lower unemployment number that came out after the debate in denver and the obama team points to some evidence that the economy, while still weak, is moving in the right direction. there's some good signs. president obama also was criticized by democrats for not thumping some of the things that they believe had gone well like the auto bailout. what would you advise joe biden to say and paul ryan to respond, if joe biden raises the issue about hey, we saved detroit, we saved the auto industry, which as you know your successor, governor snider, agreed with president obama on? >> i think a lot of people felt including president bush who started some of that in motion you had to do things to get the auto industry back on a solid footing and there was a clear debate about when the bankruptcy had to occur. there really wasn't in the bailout sort of a ignoring of the fact it was going to be a bankruptcy. i think it was a d

is this, john engler, america's new normal, do you think? >> i don't think we can accept that.it should not be. it need not be. i think the right policies could put the united states on a growth trajectory in march of this year, the ceos put out a report on economic growth and jobs, and we made a number of recommendations in the energy sector, in the regulatory sector in the kinds of strategies that the government needs to take and in some cases needs to allow the private sector to move forward with. the united states is actually today poised in many ways to lead the world in an economic recovery if we could get out of our own way. and i think the last four years of just tepid economic growth can be reversed with the correct policies. those really are a question of leadership in washington and decision making. often we're held up today by decisions that simply aren't paid. >> but, tom donohue, i remember back in 2008 speaking to an indian economist who said to me america faces a decade of unemployment hovering somewhere around 10%, and actually if you look at the latest brookin

john engler is a great example as a former governor. i worked for a former governor. states often times, lead the way on fiscal responsibility. >> the role of government is one of the big issues in the campaign. whether you believe government is an enabling or a hindrance. it seems people talk about cutting spending and then when it comes to their actual programs, they don't want it cut. governor romney recently suggested if we went off the fiscal cliff and have the spending cuts in defense, that it would kill jobs in virginia. >> but that's where you need leadership from the top. and successful governors do two things well. they provide leadership and they propose bold initiatives to their legislatures and they also have a strategy or a blueprint for economic growth in their state for the future. those are the successful governors. we need the same type of leadership in the white house. >> no president has had reorganization authority since ronald reagan lost in the 1980's, when it expired. i think there needs to come back. i would put back some type of entitlement a

john engler former governor of michigan. nice to have you both on the program. this comes up every sing gill time we get a jobs report and whether or not the books are cooked and whether or not we get a accurate reading. this conversation coming up more because we're right by a presidential election. what is your response, when you hear concerns from people maybe this is isn't a accurate reading on the job market? >> so two points, one is, these numbers are always wrong. i mean, they're done on surveys and there's revisions done over and over and over again. if you look in 2009, almost all of the revisions, when they would look back made the jobs numbers worse. looking back in 2011 and 2012 the revisions have generally made previous months better. but, look, the people who put this together, they're statisticians, statisticians. this is what they love to do. they don't cook the books. they're the most, you know, they're class trashers of every high school. jenna: we maybe don't envy their job. governor, let me -- >> but they love it. jenna: let me get your thoug
