shelley berkley is neck and neck in nevada. all of these women are giving the democrats a fighting chance and taking control of the senate. i'm joined by michelle goldberg contributing writing for "newsweek" and keli goff, political correspondent for theroot.com. i guess we could say that maybe four or five months ago, we wouldn't be here having this conversation. but it's been the war on women, it's been the middle class, the 47% comment. there's a host of things out there. it's really having a down ballot effect. how scary is it right now for the republicans if this is just going to blow up in their face? >> what's scary is a couple of the races are races that they really shouldn't be losing. the todd akin race, most obviously. but even wisconsin, even a lot of people who really admire tammy baldwin, a popular governor, they thought she was in a lot of trouble. instead she's really pulling ahead. >> when you see the number of democratic female candidates who are doing well, does this help the president? what does it look like

dean heller is trying to hang on to this seat against democrat shelley berkley.nties are key here. clark county, home of las vegas, very democratic and the one home of reno. al gore won clark by six points and lost washoo and lost the state. kerry won clark by five points and lost washoo and lost the state. 2008 obama won it but even more important, he ran up the score in clark county. beating john mccain by nearly 20 points. hence that visit he had with some casino workers the other day unprompted in las vegas. the key for berkeley is to follow that path even if thee doesn't win washo ochlo she has win big in clark county. in florida both the presidential election and the senate contest are likely to be decided along the i-4 corridor when senator bill nelson ran in 2000 he won polk, pasco, brevard and the president flipped all three winning them by a combined 52,000 votes. now republican connie mack will have to overperform in swing counties like those if he's going to win -- if he's going 0 have a chance to win nelson's seat and, chuck, we're back. that's why w

and in nevada where the superior turnout effort of the harry reid machine has kept shelley berkley within striking distance of dean heller, you've got a different kind of contest. democrats are not going to, are not likely to win all five of those contests, but every one that they win means that republicans have to win an extra seat to move closer to that majority. and while we have one sure thing, i think, out there in terms of a turnover and that's nebraska where the democratic hopeful and former senator bob kerrey is going to be romped by republican deb fisher, in many other states where republicans thought that they would have a wide open opportunity to take seats, in wisconsin where tommy thorpe has done -- thorpe has done, not run a very effective campaign and is in a toss-up contest, in florida where connie mack proved to be a poor candidate against bill nelson, and he seems to be pulling away, in michigan where pete hoekstra has not done anything close to closing the sale against debbie stabenow, there's still plenty of opportunities. and that includes places like montana where it
