bush steve hadley. steve, good to see you. a lot going on.s talk about iran and the testing of iron dome, at least against short-range rockets. the promise from president obama for more money for more missile defense against the longer range missiles. they already have patriots there, but obviously some more long-range protection as well. what is iran's read now, seeing that morsi and the islamist party has been the guarantor of this cease-fire? does that create more leverage for egypt and less for iran as the mentor to hamas and gaza? >> well, it does give egypt some influence with hamas. they, of course, have the same muslim brotherhood roots. on the other hand, this has been an opportunity for iran, because iran in some sense has been the arming agent of hamas in the same way they have been the arming agent of hezbollah. and it is also viewed by many as proof that israel only makes concessions in the face of threats of violence, which is very much out of the iranian playing book rather than the playbook of fatah or western countries who wo

hadley was part of the national security conference hosted by the world affairs council of america.utes. >> thank you so much. good morning, everyone. welcome, steve. it's a real, real pleasure to have you here this morning. we're going to dive right in. i want to begin first by giving you credit for speaking to the world affairs council, i believe it wasn't only last year but the year before, when steve hadley challenged all of us to come up for a focus, set of issues, in fact, that the councils across the united states should be honing in on. as well as you know, this year's conference is galvanized around a set of issues u.s. national security, six topic issues for the president in 2013. and let me just recap those for you because we want to drill down in these. the council selected u.s. economic competitiveness, u.s. education competing globally. the middle east, china, afghanistan, pakistan and u.s. energy policy as the six top issues. starting with that. looking at its strategically, do you feel that those are the core issues before president obama and this administration and

the former security adviser for president bush is here, steve hadley. first, your thoughts about the iranians firing at our drone. >> someone's going to have to make a judgment, is it anath of war or know? it's a very provocative act, an aggressive act. the press reports are that the drone was in international air space, where it had a right to be. it shows the volatility of the situation. as we talk about to negotiate, not negotiate, what to do with the nuclear program, this kind of incident or an intersection between our naval forces in the persian gulf, could provoke a confrontation, so it's a very dicey situation at this point. >> greta: i don't understand, though, the drone is slower than the fighter planes. either they are really bad shots, because at some point, there was a pursuit. or it was meant to be threatening and provocative in a different way. how could they not -- how could two fighter planes not take down a drone? >> it does defy imagination, a little bit. the press reports are that they followed it for a while. they took a couple passe
