jake? >> reporter: well, diane, senior white house officials tell us the overwhelming emotion here is surprise and, of course, sorrow, for a colleague and his family. white house officials were told about this on wednesday, the day after president obama was re-elected. they were told by the director of national intelligence, james clapper. on thursday, president obama was informed about this situation. the entire situation, the fbi investigation, as well as the affair. general petraeus called the national security adviser, said he wanted to talk to the president. at that meeting yesterday, he offered to resign. president obama thought about it and today called petraeus and accepted that resignation. the new acting director of the cia will be the number two, the deputy director, with whom president obama has worked closely during the osama bin laden raid, planning, for instance, and he has the inside track. but this does come at an awkward time for the cia. they are going to be called to con

let's go to the outpost, jake, and tell us about the book.at one of the deadliest battles in northern afghanistan. >> it was in northeastern afghanistan, where the man would be king takes place. it was an outpost put at the bottom of three steep mountains just 14 miles from the pakistan border. and for years, troops that served there were warning this is not going to end well, this is too dangerous. we're surrounded by high ground and eventually on october 3rd, 2009, 53 u.s. troops were attacked by about 400 taliban. the deadliest day for u.s. troops that year, but an unbelievable story of heroism and valor. the americans who died that day, a man died risking his life and sacrificing his life to either return fire or to do something for his fellow troops. so that's what the book is about. >> you say, though, it was also, unfortunately, a story of soldiers placed at the mercy of reckless commanders. >> well, ultramaltly the reason that the outpost was put where it was. there were a number of reasons why it was put in the vulnerable places. but

let's go back to jake. what are you hearing about when the president will come out j. >> he's expected in the next 45 minutes or hour. now the campaign is getting its thoughts together. remember, president obama came armed with two speeches for tonight. one of them, he will not be delivering and that is the concession speech. the other will be the president reaching out trying to bring the nation together. obvious this was a hard fought campaign. we already see some results on other news networks, and on twitter, people not liking the results, not liking the direction that this nation decided it wanted to keep going. president obama has a tall task in uniting the country and talking about a way forward. that will prove difficult in the coming weeks because there are a lot of big legislative issues that the congress will have to grapple with. right now, the white house, president obama is deciding exactly how to talk to the nation and preparing for it. it should be in the next half our, 45 mince. until then
