i am mayor lee new director of domestic violence services. today we have a mazing and important event and we are unveiling a critical center in this community. we will start off with mayors from our city and county mayor lee. please give him a round of applause. thank you. [applause] >> thank you. welcome to sunny dale, our hope sf site, our public housing site, a place we know that people not only want to survive but be part of the great city of san francisco so we are investing in people here. some months ago the police chief and me and others announced our effort to make public safety more important in the city and interrupt the violence, interrupt the patterns that we see with horrible months this year and what they're doing in terms of retaliation and violence among themselves. allow the police department to use the technology that they have and do police predictable policing and getting them the tools and the support from the rest of the city that they can do better predictive policing when it comes to crime patterns in the city and what

the whole innovation model that supports mayor lee's efforts. it's being able to adapt to the change of technology. all of our supporters and know this and between the mobile apapps industry and you will hear more from james jones and talk about communication technology and everybody in the room has a hand held computer and think about ten years ago we didn't have that so the change in technology is important. you can see what we're focused on in the 35 growing occupations in san francisco. all of that is incorporated into our curriculum and make it adaptable. the partnership with sf tech and city college is there and you heard about jaun going back to school and we are emphasizing placement we want all the folks have the tools that they need including degrees and the advanced credentials to be successful in this industry. tech sf we're trying to align with the industry trends as you see on the board. the young lady talked about computer engineer. there is system analysis. there is graphic design which is a rich industry in this city as it relat

[applause] >> thank you mayor lee. it's an honor to be here and it's great that we did two things in the month of october. we're reinforcing that san francisco is the innovation capital of the world and the giants are going to win the world series, so october is a great month for san francisco. i represent the 350 plus members of sf city which is basically a tech chamber of commerce that we formed in january of this year, and we have 350 member companies, many of those representatives are here. and those 350 companies represent probably 90% of the tech population of san francisco, and it's the tech companies who are doing the most hiring right now. we will fill over 6500 jobs this year, and even more jobs next year, so it's incumbent upon sf city with its partnership with tech sf to match this year and next year's 6500 job opportunities to san franciscans who have been trained and get them placed into the tech companies and it's a logistics job but it's very, very possible, and the sf city staff is going to go out, ask

[applause] and of course i have to thank our former mayor and senator dianne feinstein. her transit leadership began at city hall when she over saw the rebuilt of our cable car system and wonderful you have been part of this and champion for this all these years. congress woman spare thank you and speaker pelosi we want to thank you for shepherding this subway. we needed champions like all of you and thank you for that. to the mta staff and the director and everyone doing the work, to the ta staff, to the mtc, thank you for all that you're doing. now i had in my talking points a reference that we know you need the central subway if you get on the 30 stockton and apparently everyone else had that in th

mayor lee didn't even blink, and he restored in his budget all of that money. some mayors may have restored half of it and let the board scramble to find cuts or other readjustments to make up for the rest of it and mayor lee did 100% no game. mr. mayor, we are eternally grateful for that. (applause) >> and i think this, what we're doing today, is also incredibly important because for those of us who were there when it wasn't such a foregone conclusion that we were going to be able to come out of this epidemic and even see the light at the end of the tunnel, there are a lot of young people who weren't there. and who maybe don't understand what it was like and what can happen and maybe don't always take it as seriously as we need to take it in terms of prevention. and when i came out in 1990 as a 20-year old, one of the first things i did, i went out to the bars of my lesbian cousin who was 14 years older and her partner, they said to me, you really need to start out with gay guys. you shouldn't just be hanging out with lesbians. my cousin's partner said to me, y

mayor lee. ... >> mayor lee. >> i can't begin to tell you how excited i am for white house... and the (inaudible) president's fellowship program to be announced here and to see a national effort to join the local efforts. i will start out to tell you what happened to me coming a few years when i first started in government. the first years as a very brash and passionate attorney. now i have a lot of strong feelings about... (inaudible) low income tenants and the department of building inspection and fire department. the wave of the streets were conducted that will be safe in the public housing project ts. and during those years, 23 years ago. really kind of change... (inaudible) or you have to sue it to change it. of course, as an attorney (inaudible). of course, i litigated against the city for some years and got convinced that maybe that does not end up in all of the best results. so i got enticed by (inaudible) to start working in it and... required the people in the city government who wanted to do better but simply did not know how. the passion was there. the passion from

we're so proud to have mayor lee here to be in the city led by mayor lee. and, again, none of this could happen, none of our activities could happen without the support of the city. that's what makes us such a unique organization. it's what -- we've always had such strong support from the city. so, mayor lee, thank you. (applause) >> thank you. thank you, susan and barbara, and thank you all for coming out today on this ribbon cutting on a very, very important center of research. we have never given up on this fight to end aids, and i am so thankful to be working with supervisor scott weaner and supervisor david campos and the board of supervisors. and we have through the budget year in and year out, and particularly this last couple years, where state and federal funds may have been waiting. we stood up and said, we are continuing this fight at the highest level to make sure we fund everything we can to end this aids epidemic. you know, i've been in the city working and the numbers came out. there were 20,000 people that died of this dreaded disease. there
