this is just a sliver of the debris that sandy left behind on statten island.ot preparing could cost much more. here in the far rock-aways the surge crushed dozens of houses and hurricane winds fanned flames from a fire that incinerated 111 homes. the city of new york has decided to clear away what's left here along with demolishing 200 more structures damaged by the storms. >> it was my living room couches but it flipped them over in the house. just pouring water out of them today. >> reporter: rich has had a view of the atlantic ocean from his waterfront home for more than 20 years. now he's living in a motor home in the parking lot. but he wonders whether a sea barrier would be effective. >> is it worth it? i'm not so sure it's worth it because i'm not so sure it's going to work. i don't know how you're going to stop that kind of power. putting a sea wall out there. if it would work, okay. who is going to guarantee it? spending that kind of money for something that might not work.ñr >> sreenivasan: it's a point that even the netherland concedes. the country

why has statten island been forgotten? what is the gap in communication here? >> you know, we heard that for the last couple of days, brian. when i was in coney island, i heard the same thing. hearing it hear as well and some people call this this the forgotten borrough. it's hard to explain. you have the epicenter of manhattan, lower manhattan without power and that gets a lot of attention and this place is so large. you think of new york city, over 7 million people live here and you're talking about an expanse, the joey graphy is just massive. it might be that because it was hard to get around, brian, and communication is difficult, that some places felt left out and there they getting the attention now and the red cross set up this relief center here and a place at a shopping center not far from here where they're serving hot meals for people, and they also have the emergency response vehicles that they can load up with meals, 500, and drive around the neighborhoods. some of the worst ones drive in and deliver some of the meals to people and they have the cle

on new york's statten island, anger is growing. despite the controversial cancellation late friday of the new york city marathon which was set for today. >> there are other things that are more pressing than a marathon. >> everybody is forgetting about us. >> reporter: 90% of the new york subway system is expected to be running today. and lights are on in most of manhattan. yet in tom's river, new jersey, frank and anita donnelly are are enduring their seventh day without electricity or hot water. >> i see a lot of this happening in different parts of the country. i think, oh, they'll make it. until it happens to you and it takes everything out of you. >> reporter: in neighborhoods like this one hard hit by the storm, you either have people who are now displaced from their homes in shelters or they're in damaged homes trying to ride this out with no electricity and no heat. that is getting harder by the day because temperatures at night are now falling into the low 30s. of course there's an election coming on tuesday. the state of
