because you can't just open up the data. you have to do things like this, where you get the community together or you have people actually talking about it because the demand side, as we were talking about it, will be there because there is going to be someone there. there have to be people working with it who are getting out there. i think this is what this city is going to be really powerful. in terms of other cities doing as well, chicago is doing some really interesting stuff. scary cool stuff. they're taking 3 in 1 data, pothole request and crime report and matching it up with social media. they're getting this really deep and rich picture of what is going on in the city. and you can do that with data when you think about it creatively. philadelphia as i mentioned, they are really active in open data. and new york, again with 3 in 1 is doing smart analytics. i think that's what you'll see happening as well, government starts to become smarter, make better decisions, better policies. this term algorithmic regulation, whic

i talk about some of the data sets we use. most people still don't know they exist despite great efforts from the city and others. and, you know, a lot of entrepreneurs that we're looking for is the way to get leverage, a way to build an experience or build a product before we have 100,000 users using it. open data is the key way to do that. you can start out with this experience, very lively and robust with very few users. and then when the first users come in, there is actually something for them to do and see. and i think that you'll start to see as the data sets get more robust and a little bit better and hopefully as we get to improve them ourselves and put them back into the public domain, the innovation that comes off with them is just going to grow exponentially. >> this seems like a really important moment. the world of civic innovation until now has really been focused on sort of open public data and the private data world has been separate. the fact that the city realizes that it is private data that adds to that and

companies that do service for us do not own the data that they generate from us, that they will have a contractual obligation to share that with the city so that we can mine that to the rest of the city, that's advance of opportunities for everybody. i know at the heart of sharing this data, there is going to be a lot more jobs created, a lot more people out therein venting new ways to establish small businesses that will improve the way we live and work and play in the city. and we look forward to great events like a super bowl host or something like that, we're going to be able to give people a really rich amount of programs that they could access from here to santa clara to san jose. we can act regionally with our data and we can join and continue to be in the great city of san francisco. so, i want to thank all of the people, all of the different starting up companies here and those that are inventing with us, thank them for celebrating innovation month in such a exemplary way. and i think we're going to have a lot more to announce

it summarizes the main points of the data and the methods. and then what you traditionally have found in the cni in terms of the table and the text discussion has been put into an appendix which constitutes most of the document. and also describes the methodology in more detail. so, the updating effort we're doing, we hope to provide the data in the cni electronically by summer of 2013. we get a little rain out there. this isn't the first time. we're also exploring, as we do the annual update, other ways to update the cni. basically for the changing economic land use and sustainability issues the city faces. obviously your thoughts are welcome. you can e-mail them to me or call me or even include them if you complete the department's cni user survey which is on survey monkey. to the highlights, for this year you can see that there are a couple key components, have varied over the last 10 yearses we've come off of the dot-com boom at the end of 20th century. and went into the housing boom that peaked in 2008. and you can see that jobs reflect

also the opportunity to have better data sets from the work that you've done, scrubbing them and harmonizing them. i think there is also this really great opportunity to generate whole new types of data sets like motion loft is doing. and i think that this is going to present something kind of back to the city, showing where some of our gaps are and hopefully filling in some of those gaps with those data sets. so, i think that there is something about having more city data sets, existing data sets as well as creating new types of data. this is really exciting for us. >> we're going to tell a quick story on how private data can stimulate civic innovation. this summer in singapore, we had about 30 data sets opened p. up. one data set was about a million or so records of taxis all over town. typically taxi data stuff, it's hard to get, private companies, they don't want to open it up competitively. one taxi company at the last minute opened up, motion loft made it efficient to see what would happen. because they contributed to the stuff, we had five separate teams working on could we do collabo

here we have data from the city. we also have data from private data sources that read -- not going to mess with it. there's one of the variables now, the bottom you see there is median household income. we're pulling in all these different data sources, creating a beautiful visualization to tell a story at the neighborv level of how the city is growing. and some of the things you're seeing on the map here are a pipeline of information about both residential permits over the past decade or so, how has the city allocated permits throughout different neighborhoods in the city. and some of the other things you're seeing on the map is the approved businesses, the businesses are currently doing business in the city. one of the things we said once we started visualizing on the map the slow and more rapid growth of residential -- residential property in soma and then in 2011 you just saw obviously a huge residential boom in the downtown area. so, we've just actually -- we're a company in southern california. we just relocate

but the department itself has a ton of other data that we use to inform all the analysis we do and other agencies as well, but this is one piece of it. >> great. i love our case reports, but i don't usually see a lot of data in them. so, just sort of kind of just a point. i love that we're doing these reports. i think they're really informative, but they're not really informative until you kind of dig a little deeper. so, to the extent that, you know, director ram and other city agencies can kind of take out key learnings that we've discovered here and share them would be great. >> definitely. agreed. >> commissioner antonini. >> thank you. along those same lines, i think that this is a great starting point, but only if we use it practically and use it as a tool to help us make some of our decisions. for example, the whole survey, as was mentioned earlier, the approximately 50% of the jobs in san francisco are held by nonresidents, a little bit more, i think. and i think we need -- the city should undertake focus groups with major employers in san francisco privately as well as their own

then in order to sort of get a sense of the data, because there is a lot. what we did was we made pie charts for each of the groups that are groups that we're either targeting or asked about for comparison reasons. so if you look at the next chart, this chart represents 100% of the african-american students who are current 11th graders in our school system and then it shows how many are in each of the five categories. so the way to read this is that we have 323 african-american students who are current juniors. 84 of them are on-track with 110 credits plus have met their a-g markers. 153 of them have the credits, but are missing the marker. 45 are off-track with the credits. they are below 30 credits or more, or 30 credits. and then you have 24 who are moderately off-track and then 17 of our current juniors who are african-americans who are severely off-track. the next chart represents our latino students, who are current 11th graders for the class of 2014. we have 821. you see the 265 or 32% of them are on-track meeting the benchmarks. another 364 or 44% of

the u.s. government opened up weather data. not only did it have profound effect on public safety when there are storms coming and agriculture and some of the others, it just provides and helped the quality of life in a profound way, the global positioning system and... almost every night created, 100,000 in economic value. incredible opportunities for doing this in job creation and safety and quality of life and really improving the lives of americans. so it did develop the strategies of 30-plus page document to the agencies of government that they have to work up the data and they have to make this stuff available in the way that we collect it, and use it and public information should remain public and we are going to drive that forward. >> there are a lot of things in the strategy around and the use of mobile government and how we summarize the... and think about the 21st century government in that way. and the policy that launched a couple of weeks ago and so much more is being formed that i think will be very transformation

if you don't like the data, get rid of the data. r they were faced with a new report from their own education department showing that charter school kids were falling behind public school kids. how do you deal with your own administration's data on underperforming charter schools? you cut back on the data that you collect about charter schools. the bush administration just announced they would be collecting less data going forward. in 2003, after the bush administration labor department report detailed mass layoffs in the manufacturing sector, the bush administration announced they were going to stop publishing information about mass layoffs. if we get rid of the data pointing to a problem, maybe the data wouldn't look so bad. the obvious move is to get rid of it. this was a hall mark of the george w. bush administration and it appears to be one of the things that mr. romney liked very much about the george w. bush administration. it at least appears to be one of the things that he's promising to bring back. you don't like the data p

i wouldn't presume to suggest what the data actually means what we wanted to do was just add the hard data to the discussion so that the different i guess you could call them pundits on either side could argue it out on their own one of the many other tactics and i don't know to what extent this figured into your research. barrage of voter id laws or new laws basically a lot of these did get overturned by the courts but a lot of these laws in states like texas and pennsylvania some of them affected people who would serve time in prison and serve their time they've gotten out of prison got jobs that were taxpaying citizens talk a little bit about all of these tactics and how they might figure into this election. our entire investigation was a really wide range of voting rights with those twenty one so we did have investigations and disenfranchisement felon voting and that sort of thing but i heard your viewers to look on our web site go through our data not only did not only did we put the results of the data up there we also included every report that we received from every state ever
