not until the fire department arrived did it take over the evacuation of the fire personnel were ordered out of the building onto the street for the structure at 824 high street, and asphalt and some of the fire equipment had to be moved because the heat was so intense it was buckling the street and the water pipes. the fire spread quickly and started the fire department personnel were overwhelmed. buildings on either side started to go up in the flames. already the buildings were starting to go. the above officers entered the building to evacuate more students and even some in the adjacent building. approximately 150 residents were evacuated from the buildings through the smoke and haze. the ceilings bubbling, and the heat from the bookshelves were still smoldering when they exited the building. many of the residents were asleep, and where they were in mortal danger. if they have not been opened, there would have suffocated and many would have passed away in the fire. upon conferring with the fire chief, i learned there where no deaths in the fire, no serious injuries. we credit the act

the cedar fire was about 280,000 acres. as an example, i have the dubious distinction of being one of the first chief officers at the scene of that incident. just to give you an idea, at peak the cedar fire was burning 30,000 acres an hour. so that's about 9 acres a second. so something probably as large as this ship in one second. so after post-cedar fire, we recognized the navy had assets and the marine had assetness region that we should capitalize on, so i was tasked by my chief to organize a local letter of agreement so that we could, with the objective, essentially, was to streamline access to dods assets in rapid fashion and by rapid i mean within hours. if we're dealing with the level of incident that i just described, the cedar fire was essentially over in 12 hours. it started about 5:00 that night, it actually took off and started running at 11:00 at night, by 9:00 that morning it was at the gates of marine corps station miramar and it was essentially stopped. dska is an excellent tool but we needed to go a rapid r

george and i and the fire department will take care of the big fires but think if everybody in the room had a fire extinguishers how many fires you could put out. this is a big fire we will get these. it's hard for us to get around in a disaster from the streetcars and trolley buses stop, no electricity. we have the above groundwater system. it was invented years ago by our fire chiefs this is what saved the marina the boat pumping the water out put the fires out in the marina. you want to stop, look, listen and think. you size up the situation this is what we do in the fire department. you look at it. is it a little fire. a candle burning. do i get the fire extinguisher. is it a big fire can i put it out. >> it would cover the area the size of a table. anything bigger or high are than your head it's too big for you to put out with an extinguisher. wait until everybody is out. it's best to work in pairs. make sure you are the last one out of the room. do not lock it. avoid smoke and gases. cover your mouth and nose with a towel or sheet or dry cloth. if you have a jacket, if there is a

, i know not everybody that works with the fire department is currently spending time in fire houses, but that's one place where some changes could happen, you could decide you're not going to do canned foods for your meals for instance, so we kind of wanted to see if there were other ideas of station-based or fire department at large kinds of changes that could be easy to implement, low cost and exciting where you could see change, and i have in the corner here a link to the sf approved list which is sf approved list .org because san francisco passed the nation's first precautionary purchasing ordinance which means that in the ideal, product that is are safer are what's purchased for all city institutions and city agencies and offices, so this approved list has the list of like light bulbs and commuters and cleaning products and stuff like that, toilet paper, you know, that are either less toxic or less straining of resources and so that approved list can be one of the tools that you can use in fire houses, in this office, probably a lot of that's already happening, and across all of
