we want to bring in candy crowley in washington, anchor of "the state of the union."now you had a busy morning, talking to eight lawmakers and they couldn't agree onning they, could they? >> they couldn't. we had one panel, two republicans, two democrats from both the house and the senate. and even to get them to talk about whether something was going to pass or not, produced a sort of policy dispute on who had offered spending cuts, who hadn't offered spending cuts. you know, who should pay more in their tax rate, et cetera, et cetera. so it was a pretty good indication of why they haven't been able to get a deal so far. i have to tell you this was prior to the latest setback as it's being called. there was some optimism. saying most people will keep their tax rates, they shouldn't worry about it. what there was a difference of opinion on, was weather that would happen before the 31st of january. there were a number of people who thought the deadline might slip that it wouldn't harm most people in the sense that their taxes aren't going to go up right away, anyway. a

i'm candy crowley. moments ago connecticut police wrapped up a news conference and they said there has been misinformation about the investigation including claims of quotes from the gunman. connecticut's governor told cnn the gunman got into the school by using his assault weapon to shoot his own entrance into the building. connecticut's medical examiner said the rifle found at the scene friday was the primary weapon in the massacre. president obama will be here in newtown in a few hours and meet with the victims' families and will speak at an interfaith vigil at 7:00 p.m. eastern. joining me now, two connecticut lawmakers richard bloomenle that and congressman and senator-elect chris murphy whose district includes newtown. let me start with the past couple days for you all. i know you have talked to some of these families who understandably don't want to be out in public except for when they choose to. we did see one father go out. can you tell us as silly as this may seem how are they holding up? wha

let's go back to michael crowley.teve wants to get wonky with you. >> i haven't looked closely at this. what jumps out is the difference between obama saying he wants 1.6 trillion revenue and republicans say 800 billion in revenue. as luke said, not giving in on the issue of raising tax rates. they hold out this promise of tax reforms with loopholes and deductions. i don't know exactly how they arrive at that. it strikes me when you think back to 2010 when obama went along with extending the bush tax cuts for two more years. he was adamant back then, this is it and i'm doing it for two more years and i'm going to run for re-election and make them go away for rich americans. that's not acceptable to the white house, $800 billion from so-called tax reform. >> well, steve, i mean, you put it sole well i don't know how to improve on that. that's my first reaction, is that the absence of any l giving any ground on the rates mean we haven't moved that far here. i think that that's the key sticking point here. you know, as a

crowley, we've just had four years of this. we've had four years of some kind of personal grudge against this president. there has been a re-election, an emphatic electoral victory for the man. what is the problem? >> i don't understand it myself. to be honest with you, if i did i would share it with you. it apparently hasn't sunk in yet that the president won re-election. and their allegiance for so many of my republican colleagues is toward one person. grover norquist. not to their constituency whom i believe your polling has indicated wants to see washington working together to solve the problems of our country. instead their allegiance is to one man who they signed a pledge to not to raise any taxes. the real question will be whether they fulfill that pledge when they vote to raise taxes on people making more than a million dollars. i think they're in a quandary. i don't know how they get themselves out of it. for the sake of the country, they should abandon that vow and work on the first vow when they take an oath. do noth

crowley. p.j., as always, i have many questions for you. first is as far as this report, very scathing language about shortcomings and deficiencies over at the state department. how much of an issue is this for hillary clinton, who it must be noted, has thus far not been really mentioned? susan rice is the one that effectively took the heat for a lot of this. how much sort of back peddling is hillary clinton going to have to do when she does testify? >> well, this is part of her legacy. it happened on her watch. so, you know, she -- as she has said in her letter to the foreign relations committee, she is ultimately responsible for what happened in benghazi, although as tom pickering and the other members of the accountability review board made clear, that in terms of those who have made decisions or had miscalculations that contributed to the lack of security of benghazi, that happened at the assistant secretary of state level and, obviously, you've had those four resignations as a result. >> p.j., there's been some pushback as far as the s

crowley, professor at george washington university and a former assistant secretary of state for publicaffairs for president obama. sir, you have watched -- the hearings today in congress where senator kerry presided over report. seemed a little bit like a dog and pony show where you know, fingers were being pointed everywhere but where they should be. am i wrong about that? >> there's a lot of responsibility to go around. obviously there were miscalculations made within the state department. they did not see the level of threat that existed and did not appreciate the decline in security that preceded september 11th. libya bears a great deal of responsibility and i think the other aspect is that the state department overestimated libya's fundamental responsibility under the vienna convention to provide a basic level of security. but absolutely right eliot. there has not been the consistent funding for security and what ironically, what the state department is being asked to do now it does not necessarily have all of the resources it needs to accomplish what we expect. >> eliot: p.j., i
