one of 36 firefighters from his city volunteering in new york. helping fire department personnel here rebuild their homes. >> seven years ago we had a pretty big storm in new orleans. and the city of new york sent 600 guys down to help us out. and they made a huge difference for us. >> reporter: their work is partly about repaying that kindness. when hurricane katrina hit. >> when they showed up, you know, we fought fires with these guys. they helped us with rescues. they came and they did what we are doing today, which is incredibly noble but the most important thing that they did was the lifting of the spirits. >> reporter: 9 team assigned to rueter's house made quick work of his flooded base am. in just a couple of hours they tore down the basement's waterlogged wall, work rueter says would have taken him weeks on his own. >> what would you want to say to these guys. >> i love them for coming up here. >> you love them. >> and doing this, yeah. >> reporter: they didn't have to do that. >> no, no. >> you doing all right. >> reporter: before they

[laughter] >> as i did with george, enjoying every aspect, having been a son of the city, having been raised by a single mother here in this city, and having an extended relationship with the italian community and that heritage, having an extended relationship with a catholic community, in then probably the most radical person other than john burton in existence in this whole city. he became the mayor of this town. and he set the stage for everybody you see before you, every single zoll tear i person here on this stage is the end property of what moscone envisioned and what george moscone did. he partnered up with harvey milk to continue that process in the halls of this incredible building. * their death on the same day and by the same hand was literally the end product of what had been an incredible team for achievement purposes in every single solitary category. and now when i walk

cio and technology, leadership within departments for common city wide activities already exists as is stated in the response. has he or his staff really talked to the department -- really talked with department technology leadership or the city cio about this? we did. much more than one time and with much more than one person. it does not exist. the mayor's office says it exists not only in technology, but in such city wide services as finance, human resources and contracting. we would add capital planning and others. these are services the mayor states which are managed by the them and the central agency but that is not the case with technology as the may or's office believes. they choose the candidates they want to hire but work under the policies of hr. they have people working on personnel managers but not in the way leaders perform the role independent of the city cio or td. departments spend money but make sure they don't ignore what the controller requires. there are people that work on budgets and spending but again not with the same independence and control as department technology leaders do and so on. departmen

banned the sale of large high fructose sugary beverages and restricted the use of trans fats in his city's restaurants. but these measures were generally ridiculed by the political right i'm in amid charges that the nanny state is gone too far this is a sign americans still don't understand the urgency of reforming a food system that is slowly killing us all the issue is not whether americans have access to enough food with mcdonald's and taco bell on nearly every street corner in any town usa there is no shortage of consumable fast food issue however is not it is whether or not americans have access to enough quality food like fresh fruits and vegetables to eat the sort of food that when i just in high volumes won't slowly kills a lot of research has been done on food deserts these are rural or urban areas around the nation that generally don't have access to grocery stores as a result people living in these food deserts can't easily get the affordable fresh fruits foods necessary for a healthy diet so they've got to balance going to cheeseburger for a buck the u.s.d.a. has compiled a map
