mountain view road officially opened at noon today.remember the sink hole was just huge, about 80/40 feet. the road collapsed during a storm earlier this month when the drainage system was overwhelmed by flood waters. there were originally estimates that the work could take months. but the city brought in emergency contractor s. s. >> that's great because the rains are coming now. it could be another major storm. so far it's just sprinkles. and it could develop. and it'd be nice to have it covered. and everything is clean. there's no debris. so we're in good shape. >> reporter: the construction blocked the mayor's driveway during the time that it was being fixed over the past couple of weeks. however the mayor said despite his proximity to the sink hole, that is not the reason why it was fixed quickly. they were able to make a deal with this emergency crew and they fixed it. and he says he had no sway over that whatsoever. reporting live in lafayette. >>> a lot of people will 28 you the best thing about san francisco is its neighborhoo

it happened yesterday in mountain -- on mountain view drive.>> reporter: good morning. crews out here have finally fired up the heavy equipment and are trying to get this repair work all done here. well it should take several months. they have work to do today to dig out the debris. they are also pulling out big chunks of pavement from the sinkhole itself. that was all because of heavy rain. the creek that runs underthis roadway flooded and that caused the roadway to collapse. this is the la fayette creek that goes right under mountain view drive. the huge sinkhole compromised. a gas line had to be capped immediately. a sewerline was broken. it had to be diverted. there was also a 12-inch water main that came close to rupturing but it didn't. the pipe that diverts the creek water got backed up. >> a number of logs, a whole bunch of debris from upstream, came down the creek, plugged the culvert, the water had nowhere to go but over the top and it created and eddy, which eroded the soil. crews worked quickly to put some fixes in place last night.

this sinkhole has turned this quiet neighborhood on mountain view drive upside-down. you can see heavy machinery parked on the street in front of homes. part of the road is closed and that giant sinkhole is attracting much more attention than some residents would like. now, one of them said it's been very noisy with all this work going on. the noise is going to continue for quite some time. a contractor told me that the hole won't be fixed for months. it's 80 feet long, 40 feet wide and 15 feet deep. the sinkhole opened following a storm on sunday. debris blocked a drainage culvert in the lafayette creek causing it to flood and erode a section of mountain view. it was barricaded so no people or property were swallowed into the hole. utility lines were damaged. east bay m.u.d. crews worked into the night to repair a water line while the city prepared for more rain expected to hit later on today. >> once we get the water line stable then we can begin to think about a temporary culvert to get water across the roadway for the next storm. >> reporter: a permanent fix won't

you will wake up tomorrow morning to 49 in redwood city and mountain view, san jose 50. little above normal because of the cloud cover that's moving in. so there is another weather system heading to the bay area. there is also juice in the atmosphere and there's an area of high pressure that's sendingle storm track just far enough to the north that the heavier rainfall will move into far northern california and we are just going to get some light to moderate rainfall. it's a subtle change but enough of a change to alleviate flooding concerns around here in the bay area. so we have a storm system moving by tomorrow. we'll have a front dragging through but any heavy rainfall will likely stay away. you're just going to get plain old rainfall. that's it. on-and-off rain throughout the day. flooding not a concern. this is the long- range outlook. the entire west coast from oregon to mexico is forecast to be drier than normal so you want some dry weather clear things out? after wednesday we look dry for a while. tomorrow tuesday highs in the low 60s. oakland 62. santa clara 63

the rain is starting to move south of mountain view right now. for showers on 280, parts of highway 17 in the santa cruz mountains and more light returns on 101 through morgan hill and san martin. temperatures right now are in the 40s. so 44 in san francisco, as katie mentioned. 48 fremont. cooler in concord at 41 degrees. it will come down a few degrees in the next hour. the showers are tapering. it also brings snow levels down to about 3,000 feet. we could see a little bit of a rain-snow mix, mount hamilton. and chilly overnight with clearing conditions. but a dry day tomorrow. starting off wet but it will end pretty nicely through sunday. the area of low pressure sliding south just along the coast of california. it will bring some showers and even some winter weather through parts of southern california. lookout for that if you are heading through the grapevine on i-5 today. you might want to hold off until tomorrow. the forecast model shows the light rain clearing and the clouds clearing, as well. 7:00 possibly some showers in the santa cruz
