that entire brew came together in steve jobs. he was sort of a hippie-ish rebel kid, loved listening to dylan music, dropped acid, but also he loved electronics. >> jobs would eventually cross paths with a computer wizard at berkeley five years his senior named steve wozniak. they became fast friends, sharing a love of high-tech pranks and a disdain for authority. one of the things they did was to copy and improve an illicit device called a blue box, which reproduced the tones that the phone company used and allowed users to make free long-distance phone calls. >> wozniak loves the blue box. he's doing it as a prank. steve says, "we can sell them. we can market them." and they sold about 100 of 'em. and jobs said to me, "that's the beginning of apple. when we started doing that blue box, i knew that with wozniak's brilliant designs and my marketing skills, we could sell anything." >> that was still a few years off. jobs enrolled at reed college in oregon at a time when timothy leary was telling students across the country to turn

that's not really an option, whether or not steve jobs continued to be the ceo of apple. i think tim cook has done a good job. for him to try to be steve jobs, to try to be a product visionary would be a big mistake. his real skill is optimizing supply chains and running apple's massive operations. he's done a good job of really focusing in on who can be the next steve jobs. that's johnny ive. he's the person who designed all the hardware at apple. now he's in charge of the way everything looks and feels. after steve jobs, there's a natural fight between who's going to become that next person. you have to give tim cook credit for going with johnny ive. >> at the end of the day, people want to know, is the innovation alive and well at apple? are they going to continue to come out with these products that the world wants to sfwhie max, what do you think? >> there's a possibility. they only do the big innovation. steve jobs had many and huge failures. he's not remembered for those. he's remembered for the successes. you don't get the successes unless you take the big chances.

how are you not steve jobs? >> in many ways. one of the things he did for me that removed a gigantic burden that would have normally existed is he told me on a couple of occasions before he passed away to never question what he would have done, never ask the question, what steve would do, to just do what's right. >> doing right has done well for tim cook so far. he's had a good first year on the job. the company's stock is up about 45% during his tenure. and think about this, he's already presided over the rollout of three ipads, two iphones and three macs. >> it is beautiful. stunning. >> you've got guys whose job it is to get this mesh right, to get this curve right. >> to get it precisely right. >> in fairness, however, this past year, they haven't gotten everything precisely right. >> weather. >> nice weather -- >> starting with siri, the small woman who lives in your iphone. the service amazed all of us at first, but then came under criticism for not being perfect or as consistently amazing as steve jobs wanted it to be. th

tim cook is no longer in the glow of the steve jobs era.gain, that was a major -- charles: he still would have had enough credit among wall street. every apple's earnings report was not great. it was a component issue. they did not have enough supply. they never put the blame on steve jobs. he has that credibility among wall street. the first time at bat, he struck out. you know what people are saying. connell: it has been such a great performer as a stock for so long. how do you personally look at it? charles: i have it in my retirement account. i would not add it to my stocks quite yet. almost everybody that uses any sort of real fundamental analysis will say, this is a cheap struck. forget about the share price. this literally should be a $1000 stock. maybe this will ultimately split the stock. i think companies are more focused on products and execution than stock price right now. i will not add to my position until i see some sort of numbers that suggest they will turn it around. connell: we will talk more about apple coming up. dagen:

you talked about steve jobs.e did the same thing when he was building the things, took the jobs out to the china, and that is the competition we have with china. that is how we can give them ideas, but at least either some kind of a taxation or something that if they take it from us, they lose something. that's the most difficult part of entrepreneurship, still, my idea, still good. >> your question is how can we keep mass production here when the cost advantages of tremendous in places like china. one fact, though, is that labor costs an are only about 10% of a product cost. there's a lot more that goes into it. it's also the subsidies that the chinese government is giving when they give free land, free rent. it is the currency issues, but, you know, there are several encouraging signs. one, wages are rising in china, slowly, transportation costs and fuel costs increased with the natural gas in the united states, some of the manufacturing costs and some of the alternative energy manufacturing costs are coming do
