from the lighting of the national christmas tree. erica grow has been out there all afternoon. people are still pretty excited, aren't they? >> reporter: this is such a wonderful time on the ellipse out here right across from the national mall and we are listening to some beautiful holiday music right now being put on by the navy jazz band. before we got to hear the cast of jersey boys singing us a few holiday songs. there are about 3,000 people here in seats that won the lottery back in october to get these free seats for this event and 14,000 standing room only tickets were also given out for free. so we're expecting that we have about 15 to 20,000 people here right now to see this national tree lighting live, but, of course, you can watch at home right on 9 news now. we are about three or four minutes away from the actual tree lighting from what we've been told. the obama family will come out here and light up that beautiful tree that you can probably see behind me. if your familiar with the tree lighting ceremony -- you are famili

well i did an investigation for the nation magazine back in august looking at how corporations have taken advantage of the citizens united campaign finance landscape and my investigation led me to trade associations rather than super pacs the trade associations have been the ideal vehicle for corporate money in this election because they can act like super pacs funneling money to advertising to a candidate committed to a campaign committees but they don't have to disclose any of their donors so chevron eighteen t. all the big fortune one hundred companies have been giving money to trade associations not super pacs when they want to get directly involved in campaigns largely because they don't want their brand associated with dirty partisan politics but as i did this investigation i found that several large trade associations have foreign leadership and one in particular the american petroleum institute actually has a board member who's not only a foreign national is actually a foreign agent of the saudi government registered with the united states state department here in the united state

and so we have a rally well regulated militia it's called the national guard it evolved out of local militias over the history of this country i think frankly we should start calling it the national militia instead of the national guard that might cause the light bulb to go off on people who are you know haven't figured this out particularly in the supreme court in the heller case in about five years ago and in the donald case about three years ago if i'm remembering my years right. the supreme court found in that second amendment that talks about a militia and upset a free state the spirit of free space they found the individual right to have a gun in your home or whatever and i just find it bizarre we i am looking forward to the day when these five right wing wacky doodles on the supreme court at least several of them leave and can be replaced by people appointed hopefully by democratic presidents so we can undo some of the damage they've done alan in seattle washington allan thanks for calling thanks for watching the show with anyone. but thanks for taking my call tom i am a big fa

the california national guard as mentioned is the largest in the nation under 54 states and territories. we're the largest by far. and we have a broad spectrum of capabilities that range from on the low end manpower where we can deploy troops for either security missions or firefighting hand crew missions all the way up to the high end where we have a wing, we also have space station systems we can employ and support civil authorities at the direction of the governor. we're the experienced national guard force. we do some sort of civil support emergency response system every three days in california. we support the governor, mainly law enforcement and the fire services here in the state. we tend to do more emergency missions every year than any of the 53 states and territories combined. so, we have quite a bit of experience. with that experience has come a wealth of relationship building that's key to success and any disaster response is being able to work with the inter agency. we're in a unique position because in addition to my federal responsibilities for commanding both the army an

>> yeah, i wanted to comment on operatability within the california national guard. they worked really well within the framework that we established with cal fire and then beyond that throughout the national guard and the army, all of our aviators train to the same standards so really we're able to integrate any aircrew from any state, any component, into our program at any time because we're operating you noah cording you know, according to the same standards. back in 2008 we had a very large fire event here in california and we aircraft from 22 states responding to that. there is capability to respond within the national guard alone and we have started developing relationships with our title 10 partners, we do similar academics every year like they do so i think that helps generate interoperatability amongst the title 10 and title 32 assets within the state as well. >> well, i don't know about you all but i feel pretty comfortable going into this fire season. it sounds like we have a pretty integrated group not only within the military capability you but state and l
