at 65 and over. that is a huge population. i'm trying to look at issues of senior nutrition programs, alzheimer's research, but even housing policies that allow our buildings to become more senior- friendly. i guess we are calling it developing an aging-friendly city. we are also looking at how to support senior services and unique neighborhood by neighborhood programs called aging in place or village models that allow people who are older or seniors getting older to be able to support each other and to stay in their homes and communities longer so they can be contributed to the community as long as possible as opposed to institutionalizing them, which costs quite a bit more. so i'm looking with senior group's ideas of how to create more aging in place programs neighborhood by neighborhood as well, but i think those are the key issues. i am also, kind of as the father of a 10-year-old -- i have anxiety like other parents right now as we apply for a middle schools for my daughter. as a member of the school board for eight years, i know that

you want to look at the separation to see if it's even, is it the same distance at the bottom as at the top, but that's another indicator of how damaged buildings are. this one looks fairly even, but when you get closer you can tell with the racking on the bottom that this building was pulled away. liquefaction, liquefaction is a term they use when the ground is loose. usually when structures or infrastructure is built on sand or land fill, something that's not solid, what happens is in shaking, during an earthquake, the earth that's very loose, that sand or land fill, acts like water. this is sand, sand and water coming up through a hole. in japan, all these buildings were built on liquefaction. i forget what year this was, but it was one of the bigger earthquakes. 7 story buildings built on liquefaction. the amount of time the earth shook, the earth became liquid and as it became liquid, the building sank into it until it stopped. when it stopped it just fell over. light damage buildings, superficial damage, broken windows, some plaster that might be cracked but basically a light dama

it is easy to look at the unemployment rate. every tenth means many people are represented there in the numbers. it is important to keep in mind the reality of unemployment -- the foreclosure and weaker wage growth so we tried to do that. it is always a delicate balance but you don't want to scare people. i actually believe that congress will come up with a solution and i certainly hope they will. as many analysts have pointed out, if the fiscal cliff was allowed to occur and if it were sustained for any period, it could have a very negative affect on hiring, jobs, wages, economic activity, investment and the consequences of that would be felt by everybody but certainly by those in areas like where i grew up that are relatively in a week -- in -- are weak economically. it is urgent and important that congress administration come to a sensible agreement on this issue. >> i had a follow-up -- i will not ask about a bond bobbled but the new guidance that you have given in the fmoc state men will give more clues to people on bonds ab

at 9:57 a.m. there was a reverse 911 call to homes of the students informing them that there was an incident at their school. parents are currently being reunited with their children. police are on the ground missed the school searching room to room. connecticut state police have scheduled a news conference for 1:00 eastern. joining us on the phone, msnbc analyst and former fbi profiler clint van zandt. clint, give us your read, your assessment, on this situation? >> well, we know that the shooter is dead. we don't know whether that is by law enforcement action when the first responding officers went in and confronted him or whether, as we saw in the portland, oregon, mall shooting this past week, whether the shooter actually shot himself committing suicide. we know that at least two handguns were found. you know, that takes us back to april 2007 when the shooter at virginia tech, in that case, who killed 32 and wounded 15, also had two handguns. what it does suggest, though, is that this individual went in there with carrying two handguns and perhaps other ammunition. he went in there apparently to
