dan springer live in seattle with the latest now. ry, dan, it may have been dangerous even before the plane was certified to fly? >> reporter: yeah, jon. this issue's been out there a long time. now, boeing uses these 60-pound lithium ion batteries because they put a lot more power out than the standard batteries used on planes. but there were serious red flags dating back to 2006. this video has surfaced of a fire at a boeing contractor's lab near tucson, arizona. it was sparked when a lithium ion battery -- the same kind used in the dreamliner -- exploded during the test. a company makes the battery charger for the dreamliner, and we know ntsb investigators were back at this location this week testing the charger. the battery concerns prompted the faa to issue special rules for the installation of the batteries in the 787 of. investigators said yesterday the safety systems put in place by boeing definitely did not work. jon? jon: so the experts are pessimistic about getting this plane back in the air anytime soon? is. >> reporter: y

dan springer with the story from seattle. how bad is this now from boeing? we have seen repeated incidents now with the 787, dan. >> reporter: bill, this has got to worry boeing officials out in seattle. looks like yet another electrical problem aboard the 787. financially this has to be a blow to boeing and the dreamliner's reputation. it happened in wednesday morning in japan on all nippon airways. the pilot started smelling smoke in the cockpit. the pilot made emergency landing there were minor injuries as passengers evacuated the plane down the emergency chute. officials at the airport where the plane landed said there was no fire, which is important but they confirmed smelling smoke. japan airlines grounded all 24 of their 787 dreamliners in service. united airlines is the only american carrier to fly the 787. there is no word what they will do at this point. but this appears to be another battery issue but not the same one that happened last week at boston's logan airport. that was the auxiliary battery near the back of the plane on the under bell i l t

dan springer is live at our seattle newsroom tonight. that home to boeing. worried are company officials? >> well, shep, they were worried enough yesterday to have a big conference call all of their 787 customers. and then they got more bad news today, of course, first in a "wall street journal" report about a wiring problem and then that fuel leak by far the most serious incident though is the fire. a company source tells me a lithium ion battery overheated. it's the power source when the plane's engines are off. it's not the first electrical problem to hit the dream liner. a fire on taste flight back in 2010. three more electrical malfunctions in december of last year. a flight had to be diverted to new orleans. a qatar airway's flight had the same issue and united had to take a plane out of service to replace a power panel and generator. >> these are all electrical issues but it appears to me that these are different electrical issues. now, having said that the national transportation safety board will probably take a look at all of these electrical issue

dan springer live in seattle where teams assem being the 787. the fa amp wants proof that batteries are safe before they can fly again is that what we can report? >> that is right, bill. the f.a.a. issued what they call an emergency air worthiness directive to potential fire risk in the 787 and grounding the u.s. airliner fleet grounded six planes all owned by united airline. this is a big change for the f.a.a. just last friday officials said the 787s were completely safe. even as they announced a comprehensive review of the plane's electrical system. even though analysts tell me they don't think the issue in japan today was all that serious in terms of the threat to the aircraft coming down. the feds have seen enough to jump in. all the recent problems the way the plane is powered. the lithium ion batteries are used to provide backup electricity. this directive will mean that united will be scrambling to move flights around -- planes around and flights getting cancelled. >> bill: how big of a problem is this for boeing. >> they may be getting c
