i'm happy to be joined by the one and only john conyers. ure. >> greetings, and it's a pleasure to be with you sir. >> john: it's great to have you. i'm very inspired but what you're trying to do. the g.o.p. only held the house through jerrymandering, why is a voter amendment needed. >> what we found out after the election in november was that there were a great number of disillusionses voters who had to wait hours in line, not just in detroit and chicago but all across the country. we also found that there were a number of states that were doing supposedly clever things to discourage voting. for example, they would make the early voting shorter. they would limit registering to vote. they would do all that they could that would make voting a little more difficult. caging in which you try to find out who isn't living where they are supposed to be living, and challenging their vote. and so what a number of us have been working on through a lot of election reform groups and civil rights groups and some scholars is that we put together this omni

tonight on "viewpoint" we're going to have representative john conyers. >> awesome. >> yes.ks it doesn't glorify torture. but she wrote that i don't personally believe that torture lead to the capture of bin laden, but to include that is part of what went on. >> the problem is people are going to see this movie and think that's what caused the capture of bin laden. it is a terrific film. everyone should see it. the last 45 minutes a riveting but it's like merchant of vinace. >> stephanie: exactly. it's like it made it seem that dick cheney was the technical advisor. >> yeah, and it's great that she made a film about torture, and shows what our tax dollars were paying for. >> stephanie: the conspiracy theory out here in hollywood in case you know is that steven spielberg is behind all of the controversy because he wants lincoln to win. >> yes, oscar politicking. but i love that she directed a movie about skydiving bank robbers. >> stephanie: what film is that? >> point break. >> stephanie: i love anything with patrick swayze. >> you mean the fbi is going to pay me to serve. gwen moore, john conyers. madam leader, thank you. and ladies and gentlemen, thank you very much for your leadership, your passion, your courage to get this bill done. thank you very much. >> our distinguished ranking member of the judiciary committee, who has been fighting this fight and leading the charge for decades as well, mr. conyers. >> thank you so much, madam leader, and to our distinguished whip. before our beloved gwen moore got to congress, steny hoyer and i were introducing the violence against women act. it's gone through a number of iterations and we now have the real version improved over in the senate in which hundreds of groups participated. law enforcement officers, advocates, survivors of this horrible kind of cruelty. and so i am so proud that gwen moore is now with us to get this across the line. i must point out that i am optimistic enough, madam leader, to think that we will get republican support on this bill. and with that spirit, i'm proud to stand with all of you ladies and a couple of guys -- [laughter] >>

our next caller is john in conyers, georgia, on our republican line. caller: yes, i agree with what he was just saying, but it's not republicans and democrats. it is the congress itself that is playing with our money. it is president's current and past that have played with our money. greed of the politicians up their that have been playing with our money. they used a situation that we just have to scare people, to where we have almost non- reaction on both sides to push and fight each other and then use a bill setting we have done this as a pressure valve to release the, so that everybody's adrenalin falls out, so they can point blame and maintain their positions of power and their ability to spend money and going hither and thither in the arm. -- and yond. congress was never meant to be a full-time job. it was supposed to be part-time. for someone to be up there six years and get full retirement, that's crazy. they have passed laws and regulations we have to follow that they are exempt from. all that should be a wash. if they pass a law, they have to
