for now, though, across the great lakes we have an alberta clipper moving through here. this is creating about five to ten centimeters snowfall with it, also some gusty winds, temperatures remaining on the chilly side. chicago minus 1. toronto up to minus 5. across europe look at this big swirl on the satellite picture. what this is doing is bringing windy conditions, heavy snowfall to the scandinavia peninsula but pushing all that cold air out of the arctic to the south and that's creating some wet and unstable conditions in the mediterranean. some severe weather will be firing up in italy and greece. you see high within warnings and severe storm warnings in effect as these temperatures remain on the warm side. all that cold air coming from the north these will be going down to single digits in rome and athens. budapest, you'll be dropping below the freezing mark. 5 and 6 in london and paris. that's a look at your weather. here's your extended forecast. >>> we'll be back in 30 minutes with more news. i'm gene otani in tokyo.

that's an alberta clipper. north dakota across minnesota and wisconsin seeing five centimeters of snowfall here into the next 24 hours. few areas could be seeing 15 centimeters especially once you start getting enhanced by the lake-effect. winnipeg high of minus 4. chicago up to 4 degrees. further towards the west and south, things quiet. los angeles 21. eastern asia, high pressure is dominating much of korea, even into japan. particularly this big blue h. what that means a big dome that's suppressing any weather from really developing but there's going change in the horizon. into southern china we have a station jae boundary that's developing up here. bringing freezing rain across much of the area on thursday west of shanghai. but that storm system starts to develop and pull off towards the east by thursday evening. you'll start to see rain across tokyo on friday. doesn't look like it will be rather unsettled by the end of the work week. weekend should be clearing up. for the time being expect those rain showe

and an alberta clipper across the great lakes that will bring you five centimeters of snow. the system is fairly quick, so that shouldn't give too much of a problem there. and down toward the south. rain starting to clear up across the gulf states. but it is going to be back. another system coming in thursday and friday and it will be accompanied by more severe thunderstorms too. take a look at temperatures, minus 3 in toronto. 2 degrees in new york city. minus 17 in winnipeg. frigid across the central and eastern portions of the northern tier of the continent. not bad here out west and to the south. mid 20s in houston and mexico city and miami. all right. into europe, this large system continues to rotate just over the british isles. it will be coming down and headed to the southeast. so it will dump some pretty significant snowfall across western and central locations. up to the north as well. getting yours, and accompanied by strong winds. and gusts up to 100 kilometers per hour. i would expect delays and cancelations, check your colitis cancellations, check your flights

we have the alberta clipper moving across the great lakes. this has brought some heavy snowfall across the great lakes about 30 centimeters enhanced here down here by lake erie. as it pushes to the east we have this other one that brought rough weather in the southeast. that's running up the coast lining. once these two interact with each other it will become a strong storm system. 60 centimeters of snow. quite uncommon for place like boston along the eastern portions of new england here. 110 kilometer per hour winds. creating white out conditions. if it wasn't bad enough with those you have these hurricane force winds. temperatures out here going to be bitter cold wind chill not to mention the fact that right near the coastline there's a risk of storm surge and coastal flooding. a very serious storm already. prep regulates are in place for this one as it pushes overhead going through friday evening and into saturday and needless to say boston you're going to see blizzard conditions. temperatures at minus 4 here for your high on saturday. was

the alberta clipper continuing to push across the great lakes bringing 10 to 15 centimeters of snowfallso enhanced by the lake-effect snowfall pushing off to ontario, quebec and western new york. i'm talking about the cool down with temperatures. after that pushes off, we'll see all this cold air. look at winnipeg, minus 14 for the high. chicago, you'll be getting below the freezing mark on your friday, even miami, clear down here in florida, the frontal area dips off here to be getting into the teens. warm now but really does look like a cool-off is expected into the weekend. now over to europe across the british isles, we are warming up for now. it is expected to cool down on friday, but the southerly warm air kept things getting much warmer. it is all due to the frontal area pushing across the southern u.k. into the low countries. that's going to be bringing some rain showers and snowfall into the alps here as it does continue to weaken out. that's really the big story, it is going to be weakening out. the high pressure working in behind it. meanwhile across italy to the balkans, we

another alberta clipper is coming our way. it's due to arrive here tomorrow evening. outside for now though -- >> do you hear music? >> i do hear music. this is nothing new in my world, jim. i hear music all the time. usually it's a sign to get off the air. outside we've got cloudy skies, indeed. temperatures have remained on the chilly side today, but we've inched our way above the freezing mark. the light snow showers we continue to see not really having that much success sticking to the ground tonight, unlike last night when they had no trouble at all. now though 34. this time yesterday we were 28 degrees and that has made all the difference. light wind now, southwesterly at 7 miles per hour. metro temperatures generally low to mid-30s. 31 in an lap lis and reston. 32 in leesburg. 30 in frederick. 30 in winchester. most of the snow right up the heart of interstate 270 up to 70 out towards hagerstown maryland. pretty much right along the dulles greenway as well. not a lot of this sticking to the roads. that's the good news in all this. could still be one or two slip

the reason this is important is that this moisture may merge with that alberta clipper to become a strongertorm and that would happen during the day on friday somewhere off the coast. now typically when this happens, you really need some kind of area of high pressure up to the north to slow it down to allow it to get strong and find that colder air. but in this case, it looks like it wants to do that anyway and what we think the scenario is going to be somewhere up in this purple area. and this may shift a little bit. this could be 1 to 2 feet of snow. i'm not sure new york city is in on that. they are on the edge of it. there will be snow. it's going to be mostly rain for d.c. we might have a touch of winter mix tomorrow night and then maybe we wrap around a little snow to end it all on friday night as the storm system really gets wound up. but the way things are looking right now in the pink here. i want you to see the scale. that brighter pink color is a range of 24 to 36 inches. boston is close to that. burrelling is close to that. maine is in that. you work your way through new york an

it is the latest alberta clippers' tight system to come across the area. the conceit that we've had some sunshine this morning and little snow flurries at times as well. they have not amounted to very much. it has been pretty interesting the last couple of weeks because we have picked up the bulk of our snow. about 85% of the seasonal snow has come town. >> here of the clouds. concede they're kind of bundy. they're producing a brief burst of snow that lasts a couple of hours. madison wisconsin picked up about 1.4 in. as this went across the area earlier this morning. it is just the latest little clipper to ride into the area. down by the ohio river this afternoon temperatures will be up in the fifties even as we sit here in the low 30's. here's a good radar view of this band of snow closing in on us. it looks like it lasts about two hours. it comes down pretty dramatically. rockford is down to about one and three-quarters mile. as this comes and it will look pretty dramatic like we're really going to get in on something. we've had four of them through yest

this is the parade of the alberta clipper we have at least five weather systems that we are watchingccumulating snow look what was spotted in south elgin today look at that beautiful shot their there are some robins the stick around all year long in this area. we had a shot of this last night but these cold environments lead to these prizm like rays of color. it was a gorgeous day we have steam coming off of the lake. these crystals go on to produce the snow that falls on michigan we were 20 degrees below normal today in chicago we are in the 36th hour of what may be a 45 consecutive hour period of subzero wind chills. each of them will bring a spike of snow another one will come in tomorrow night another one tuesday and probably another one towards thursday. unfortunately you would think a saw was coming with these big temperature increases. a jet stream cents little disturbances to the northwest each one of them list the air this snow begins to fall look at this snow that you see on the ground out west this will be the biggest single snow event tonight winter that has only produced

these clouds are with an alberta clipper that may bring us a rain shower tonight that's awfully closean asteroid that will pass 170,000 mi. above earth. scientists are going to take a closer look at that it takes place on friday the day after tomorrow look at the highs today, 44 at o'hare. sunshine this time of year is about 80% stronger than it was back in september. st. louis at 55, but regrouping to the north and about ready to make it today move on us. the cool air passing the border into international falls so these temperatures are to drop starting late tomorrow and tomorrow night for the moment we are above freezing. we calculate a wind chill of just 31 degrees. it's also responsible for the warmth that has come into our area today. the jet stream is buckling so this brings the flow in like this by week's end in saturday the result is we're going to tap cold air and it's going to plunge southward into this region the winds are blowing in strongly from the north this brings the cold air deeply into the united states makes it all the way down the gulf coast in three or four days
