national security correspondent jennifer griffin is at the pentagon tonight. >> for the past 19 yeare u.s. held asymmetric advantage over the enemies with unmanned aerial surveillance. for first time, the u.s. agreed to sell predators to allies in the middle east. uae, defense official announced the deal at the larmest arms exposition. sources close to deal confirm the uae agreed to buy $1.4 billion in u.s. weapons including $200 million in unarmed predator drones. about 20 remotely piloted aircraft from the jep atomic aeronautical system. the predators would be modified and unarmed but there is no way to be sure they would remain that way. >> people are pretty innovative in terms of being able to modify aircraft so they could be armed. so it's certainly not fool-proof. >> the former u.s. air force deputy chief of staff for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance is not opposed to deal because it gives those in the gulf greater advantage over the me is especially as the concerns rise above iran. >> we have a particular asymmetric advantage with remotely aircraft and the lead wo

national security correspondent jennifer griffin is live at the pentagon. at is the latest you're hearing about general allen and this decision, jennifer? >> reporter: well, remember, jon, general john allen was supposed to leave as the top commander in afghanistan and got to become the supreme allied commander in europe but that's when the jill kelley e-mails interfered with that. there was a pentagon inspector general investigation into those e-mails. eventually he was cleared by that investigation. so it looked like his nomination was going to go forward but our white house correspondent, ed henry, heard from sources yesterday that in fact general allen was being pushed out. that he was in fact not going to be renominated as the supreme allied commander in europe and go to nato headquarters. that he in fact would be retiring. the defense department is pushing back on that characterization suggesting that leon panetta, the defense secretary, met with general allen just days ago. here is what panetta said yesterday. >> the opportunity to meet with him yeste

national security correspondent jennifer griffin joins us live from the pentagon. ? >> reporter: martha, saudi arabia and the united arab emirates have been asking some time to buy the remotely-powered aircraft, known as drones. it wasn't until the largest arms expo in the world which began in abu dhabi that the deal was announced. they agreed to by $4.5 billion in u.s. weapons including in $200 million in unarmed predator drones. this amounts to 20 remotely-piloted aircraft from a u.s. contractor. they will buy them through a middleman known as the international golden group. the state department and the pentagon remain mum on the deal which was confirmed to the fox news from u.a.e. source,. here is a press release from generalatomics an updated version of our flagship predator, predator xp offers improved intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities and has been licensed by the u.s. government to be proposed to sale to a broader customer base including customers in the middle east and north africa. this appears to clear the way for the sales which pre
