sheriff olson, trooper kevin cook with the latest on this standoff that started tuesday afternoon when we're told that man, jimmy lee dykes, neighbors have identified him as, dragged the boy into that hole, into the bunker. let's listen for updates from authorities. >> good morning. are we all ready to get started? excuse me. i'm sorry. again, i'd like to thank everybody for your continued patience. our volunteers and our community for the continued prayers and support. i want to update you on our current situation. overnight, we had an open line of communication with mr. dykes. i know last night one of the questions was asked about the child's condition. mr. dykes through our communication we've been able to -- he's told us that he has an electric heater and some blankets inside, that he's taking care of him. we also -- he's also allowed us to provide coloring books, medication, toys. i want to thank him for taking care of our child. that's very important. and this time i'm going to let you ask me a couple questions. but, you know, it needs to be brief and there's very limited on what i can give you, so please -- >

. >> sheriff wally olson of dale county referring to the individual hostage taker, jimmy lee dykes said, and i'm quoting the sheriff, he feels like he has a story that's important to him. although it's very complex, we're trying to make a safe environment. what kind of story would an individual have that would prompt them to take a 5-year-old child hostage having killed the bus driver of a school vehicle? >> well, i think there may have been a number of things going on with mr.d ykes. number one, we're told by friends and neighbors that he didn't like government for whatever his reason. number two, that he had conflicts with his neighbors. so all of these scenarios that were going on, he may have felt, for example, martin, that he was the victim, that he was being oppressed. that, in fact, even with the shooting of the bus driver, and realize i only say this from a negotiator's perspective to try to minimize what he did in his own mind, the negotiator could build a scenario to the effect that, jimmy lee, you didn't mean to shoot the bus driver. you went on board, you had a gun to protec

lee dykes. they are speaking to him through a four-inch ventilation pipe connected to his underground shelter, his five-year old hostage has been identified only as ethan, dale county sheriff wally olson. >> he told us he has an electric heater and blankets inside that he is taking care of him. he also allowed us to provide coloring books, medication toys, and i want to thank him for taking care of our child. >> police would not say if dykes has made demands. the 65-year-old allegedly forced his way on to this school bus tuesday and demanded hostages. police say dykes shot and killed driver charles poland jr. when he resisted. cindy steiner's grandson was on the bus. >> he seized the bus driver and this man who done the shooting he sees blood here is the gun, he hears a lot of screaming. >> is he having nightmares? >> yes. >> one neighbor told us dykes spoke of making worldwide news some day. others said he was often hostile and convinced the government was out to get him. but we have learned dykes is a navy veteran who served in the late sixties in japan and california, where he received awards for good conduct. >> people who know the hostage say he has autism and needs medication. t

lee dikes is giving the child. what are they? >> we just heard from the sheriff here, wally olson. he said a few interesting things. we learned that mr. dykes has electric heater and blankets. certainly it's cold in the bunker, about a constant 50 degrees in that bunker underground. they're still able to get the young boy medications he needs. he suffers from asperger's syndrome and dhd. also able to get him the crayons and coloring book. also toys. and there was another interesting thing that i noticed in this particular press conference. when the sheriff said that he wanted to thank mr. dykes, listen to this. >> he's told us that he has a lk heater and blankets inside that he's taking care of him. he's also allowed us to provide coloring books, medication, toys, and i want to thank him for taking care of our child. that's very important. >> reporter: again, he wanted to thank him for taking care of their boy. you can tell this is a very personal, it's something that they're paying very close attention to, everything they're able to glean from communications with mr. dykes. miguel, remember, this all started back

my name is olson lee. i'm the director of the mayor's office of housing. and this is a great day, isn't it? >> yes, it is. >> it's a great day. and one of the things about anything that we do in san francisco is that it does take a whole village, and we have a whole village here. and it's about a sense of partnership that we are able to celebrate. and i really want to emphasize celebration, because this is the first phase of the first phase of many projects like this in san francisco. (applause) >> and this is something that is an only in san francisco development where we're rebuilding distressed public housing for the current residents, and doing this in a way that is -- contributes to the neighborhoods. it contributes to the health and welfare of the existing families and invites new families and creates complete neighborhoods. and only in san francisco are we willing to take on this task to really change the lives of
