>> three marines are dead after a shooting incident and devin dwyer has details. devin. devin, you there? >> reporter: good morning, john and diana. that's right, a marine corps spokesman just told us that the all-clear has been given after an overnight incident with the alleged gunman found dead. now, this incident took place on marine corps base, a sprawling facility just south of washington that sits on nearly 100 square miles right near the potomac river. here's what we know so far, three marines are dead in this. two of them were found inside a barracks, the shooter who was also a marine died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. they believe he was a staff member of the officer candidate school at the base and gunfire broke out late last night, just about 11:00 p.m. local time when another marine was wounded, taken to a hospital and later declared dead. the base had been on lockdown. that lockdown has now been lifted and officials say they expect to conduct a full investigation starting later today. john and diana. >> all right, devin, thank you.

abc's devin dwyer joining us from washington with the latest on this one. good morning, devin. >> reporter: hey, good morning, john and diana. that's right. after that major meteor strike in russia last month, scientists want congress to take action so a similar disaster doesn't happen here. nasa chief charles bolden was on capitol hill yesterday. he said a small meteor that injured more than a thousand people in russia could have been detected, even deflected, if the right equipment was in place. he says the u.s. needs new outer space telescopes with infrared technology to track meteors because right now there's not much we can do. >> if you detected even a small one, like the one that they did in russia, headed for new york city in three weeks, what would we do? >> the answer to you is if it's coming in three weeks, pray. >> reporter: now, that meteor was only 55 feet long. experts say the chances of a major catastrophe from that is slim but are very real now. there are roughly 10,000 small meteors floating around within range of earth, all of those capab

devin. >> reporter: that's right. what's so remarkable and horribly sad about the whole story is how young these men were. six of the marines who were killed were in their 20s, all were younger than 26. one of them, as you mentioned earlier, was just 19 years old, and even at those ages, six of the seven men had already served tours of duty in afghanistan. of course, as we reported this week, the men were killed monday night during a live fire training exercise at a military facility in nevada. they were all based at camp lejeune in north carolina. eight of the others involved in the training exercise were injured. the remains of those being killed are now being flown back to their families while the marines investigate just what went wrong. the mother of one of the victims told us, mason vanderwork, could hardly contain herself with grief. >> he was truly my best friend, not only my son, but my best friend and my hero, and he could never be replaced. >> reporter: now the marines say they've suspended most use of the
