nick paton walsh is on the phone. nick, what is going on today?who will be meeting president karzai, a bh man who he is said to have a good personal relationship. so much to get to after the acrimony with chuck hagel. he will apparently be assuring president karzai in a bid to try to find some sort of reconciliation that may bring an end to the fighting. after president karzai's comment that the u.s. is somehow colluding. we also understand from a senior department official that a place kerry will not be traveling to, of course many had thought, continuing on to pakistan. but the secretary has decided that given the atmosphere in pakistan, the transfer from civilian government to civilian government, he decided that was not the time necessarily to go there just in case it would be misinterpreted as u.s. backing for a particular party. but here in kabul, a relationship that has to be strong in the months ahead. trying to get the reconciliation talks to continue. >> nick, thanks so much. >>> a key defense witness in the jodi arias murder trial is ba

nick paton walsh is in bay rue. has sad's regime, they're blaming the rebelses, they're blaming the government. so who has the access to the chemical weapons? who has the most to gain from this? >> reporter: first off there is no definite proof that chemical weapons were used. what we do know is in an area near allepo, both the regime and reb bem belels are saying some gas was given off and we've seen pictures taken from a hospital showing some soldiers and civilians obviously suffering from the effects of gas. this appears to have landed very close to rebel regime lines, but actually hit the regime more hard. as you said earlier, the rebels don't really have the chemical weapons and if they did, that would suggest the assad stockpile has fallen into their hands. the regime is saying the rebels did have it, but the assad regime are the ones with the large chemical stockpile. once again no definitive proof they were used at all, but a serious development. >> one that the president had spoken about hypothetically back

nick paton walsh is in kabul where he's traveling with secretary of state john kerry on his first official. kerry made a surprise stop to visit karzai today. nick, how is kerry trying to help karzai? >> reporter: i think leaning on that longtime friendship they talked about in the press conference today, perhaps trying to let people in washington know that the u.s. is working with the taliban to prevent violence denied by many there to suggest they can still work with him, he's still potentially an ally. but we're really talking about a very fraught relationship here that requires this kind of theater in front of cameras when really the u.s. and afghanistan should be working so closely, these vital agreements in the future, because of the drawdown that's happening now. they should be working in harmony, not trying to prove to everybody they can still get along, jake. >> nick, this is an unstable leader in an unstable country. what is the prognosis for karzai's continued success in afghanistan after almost all of the u.s. military leaves at the end of next year? >> reporter: well, he's pote
