the hp pavilion here can hold nearly 20,000 people and that is why santa cruz police decided to move the memorial to san jose because of all the people expected. the service will be honoring sergeant lauren baker and elizabeth butler. she was with the department for ten years and worked in hostage negotiations, a drug agent, also in patrol and investigations. she graduated from santa cruz and leaves behind her boyfriend and their two young sons. sergeant baker was a 28 year veteran and leaves a wife, two daughters and a son. the chief has described him as his m entor. he told us that baker would be happy that the service was being held at the hp pavilion. >> he had tickets to the sharks games, he spent a lot of time there. he loved hockey. he was a big san francisco giants fan. he had season tickets to the games. he loved nascar and he did have that -- that south bay connection over the hill. >> reporter: the chief said there will be law enforcement from all over the state and across the country in attendance. there will be a helicopter fly over and a performance by an american idol s

tonight final preparations, people from around the country will gather at the hp pavilion in san jose for the funeral of the two fallen santa cruz police officers. streets and freeways will be impacted tomorrow during this emotional event. nbc bay area's damian trujillo joins us this evening from santa cruz. damian? >> reporter: well, raj, they opened the doors at 3:00 this afternoon here at the santa cruz memorial. there's been a steady flow of people ever since. insid inside the chapel are the two officers who gave their lives for their community. they lie with honor inside the memorial, side-by-side. sergeant butch baker and sergeant elizabeth butler. >> i brought some flowers to come and pay my respects to these brilliant officers that went way beyond the line of duty. >> reporter: supporters and strangers lined up for their turn to pay homage to a man and a woman who died wearing their blues protecting the city. >> it's something i don't think we can comprehend. it's a tragedy that should have never happened. >> reporter: sergeant baker and officer butler were questioning jeremy

earlier today, crews spent the afternoon making sure everything was in place at the hp pavilion. more than 2 dozen officers did a walk through making sure the space is perfect for tomorrow's service. >> today, where we can all come together and celebrate what they gave to our communities and honor their memory. >> a salute will start in the morning with a 33 mile procession starting from the board walk in santa cruz. that ro session of plifs from all over will bring highway 17 to a slow crawl as it makes its way down to highway 85 and 87. highway overcrossings will be packed with people wanting to pay tribute to the officers. >> we're just so touched that these individuals want to come forward and take part in this. they want to be part of something that honors these officer's legacies. >> today, hundreds pay their respects at the santa cruz memorial. inside, a final salute to two officers, side-by-side, awaiting their final farewell. >> i had a hollow feeling in my heart that i needed to do something. so i went and got some flowers. >> there will be a lot of dignitaries here tomo

over in the hp pavillion, you can see the flag hanging from two fire trucks and a salute to fallen officershat were killed a week and two days ago in the line of duty. >> we'll tell you about the officer. sergeant loran baker was a veteran and elizabeth was an officer who fought crime. >> it is rather dark in the pavilion. people are gathering and they expect 18,000 people. the family wanted an indoor location so that mourners could be together and the police chief searched long and hard for that. santa cruz doesn't have a venue for those who wanted to pay tribute to the fallen officers. they are the first officers killed in the history of the police department. caskets arrived this morn family and friends and here in the bay area are here at today's service. among the speakers
