. >> thank you, cornell. oakland police say one of their officers shot and wounded an armed robbery suspect after he refused to stop. the armed robbery was reported before 10:00 last night on clay street near 10th. officers saw three people matching the description of the suspects a block away on jefferson and 10th. police tried to stop them and one of the officers shot one of the suspects. the injuries are not life threatening and the officer was not hurt. >> preschool where a teacher is accuses of binding the hands and feet of a student who would not take a nap is in more trouble. administrators at the preschool say a substitute teacher reportedly pinched and squeezed a child's arm. this happened back in february before the more famous incident where a student's hands and feet were bound because she would not sleep. the e-mail read it is unknown when the incident occurred. it was alleged to have happened in the month of february of 2013. the staff member is no longer employed late february of 2013. >> the m

abc7 news reporter cornell bernard has that story. cornell? >> a tragic story in downtown san jose.o this home on north fifth near jackson at 11:30 last night on word people were trapped in an outbuilding in the rear of the home. as soon as firefighters could make entry, they found the body of a seven-year-old girl inside. a four-year-old girl and an adult male who were in or around the structure were able to get out. they suffered severe smoke inhalation. they are hospitalized at this hour in san jose. firefighters continue to investigate this fire. firefighters are still on the scene, at least two engine companies are here as they are inspecting the rear of the home where the fire was centered. again, a seven-year-old girl lost her life in the fire. the firefighters trying to find out how, exactly, the tragedy happened. we are live in downtown san jose this morning for abc7 news. >> new details this morning in another deadly san jose fire that broke out at 8:30 last night on south daniel way, officials are now saying the fire claimed the lives of two people, an elderly woman was p

abc7 news reporter cornell bernard will show us what arrived at the construction site. cornell?quite a site, good morning, if you have wondered what it takes to dig a subway tunnel, this is it. first pieces of the giant tunnel boring machine just arrived and they are super huge. more pieces will arrive later from china. when it is assembled it will be 300' long. now comes the hard part, lowering them to a hole with the starting point called the launch box. two of the tunnel boring machines will dig 1.5 miles to north beach to create the central subway project. putting the machine together will take weeks because they weigh a lot. >> this piece is the forward shield and it is approximately 120 tons. >> when it is put together, what is the tonnage? i believe the machine is 400 tons. >> wow is right, part of the boring device that does the work is called the cutter head and it can dig 40' a day. the whole project is going to take about six years total cost for the big dig 1.6 billion. i joked with our construction worker last hour and he said they could be called the boring device

we go back to abc7 news reporter cornell bernard. >> good morning. the high wins have done a lot of damage in san francisco this morning. look at this. city crews now are scrambling to remove this tree which snapped and fell on portrero avenue between 24th and 25th, the high wins fell on to a house and several cars here. in fact, they pretty much crushed a honda that was parked on the sidewalk, snapped a cable, as well, but buses are still running through here and not affected. also fell on to the house but no damage to the house and no one hurt. across town, a tree has fallen blocking 48th avenue and this tree we estimate is between 70 and 80' tall and will likely be there for some time. and ocean beach got the full brunt of wind this morning and there is a lot of blowing sand. be very careful out there this morning. at portrero avenue we have a wood chipper and crews are doing a good job removing the tree that fell about 3:00 this morning. the folks inside were not hurt but if you are coming down, if you need portrero avenue to get to work, it is c

abc7 news reporter cornell bernard is live with the latest. cornell?oting happened in a busy shopping center parking lot. we got off the phone with the sheriff, and they say that suspect remains hospitalized this morning after being shot and seriously wounded by a napa police officer. now, it happened last night when officers with a napa county special investigative unit was doing surveillance on a shopping center near a home depot watching a car with three suspects, one wanted for assault with a deadly weapon. the sheriff officials say when the officers tried to arrest the men at gunpoint, one of them got out of the car, started to struggle with one of the agents who then shot the suspect once in the chest. that officer was not hurt. he now is on paid administration leave as the investigate begins, and the suspect and at queen of the valley hospital in napa and his name and condition have not yet been released. we are live at the sheriff's department of napa. >> we have break news for you from the east bay. officers are on the scene of a deadly stabbi

abc7 news reporter cornell bernard has the latest. >> the two carjacking suspects are likely injured nissan into the side of the apartment building at union and van ness. believe it or not they took off running and took out a fire hydrant. look the at the video shot moments after the crash. an incredible sight with water gushing 20 or 30' in the air. it was carjacked, the vehicle, flee days ago. the suspects took off when they were spotted, and they hit a bus and hit a hydrant and then slammed into the side of the apartment building. look at the side of the suspect car. airbags were deployed. it is hard to believe anyone could walk away let alone runaway from here but that is what happened. police are now looking for two male suspects. there is no real description on them. they say they were wearing black t-shirts and are very likely injured from the impact of the crash. there were no passengers on the bus. the driver was shaken up. the driver was not injured. the investigation conditions at union and van ness. we are live in san francisco for abc7 news. >> now a look at the weather

abc7 news reporter cornell bernard is at james madison school in san leandro. >> the fire is out but the damage has been done on the campus of james madison elementary school. the fire here broke out at midnight and damaged a lot of portable classrooms. we will find out from alameda county fire. chief, tell us what time did the fire break out in. >> we had a 9-1-1 call at it will minutes after midnight and the first units were here in five minutes and it was fully involved with fire and we had to gain access at the school. when we got access it was knocked now 20 minutes. >> how many portable classrooms? >> six units combined to make a large building, just delivered yesterday afternoon and they were not in service, no electrical power, no one in the buildings. >> just delivered yesterday. >> correct. and the cause? >> we have an investigator working on it. it is not a safe condition so we will have more opportunity to see what happens with daylight. school officials have been notified and they are on the way to the campus at this hour. we will let you know as we get further details w
