i was not going to write about my family. but i wanted to write about an aspect about china and women. those were the 2 things i knew when i began the first book. i was fortunate enough to it stumble upon the silk working women which gave me everything i wanted. it gave me the culture. it gave me a sense of what it meant to be a female chinese women in that time and a sense of empowerment on what they had done. regardless of what they understood they were doing at the time. they didn't know it was a culture that was earning money and living independent of husbands and family that was doing everything against what it meant to be in the chinese culture. i hadn't heard about that and it was perfect. it was exactly what i was looking for. i can go off and preach about the fact they think so many of us asian american authors and asian authors in general tend to go back and write about our ancestors and write about things in our past not our specific past but may be of of ancestors and mothers and grand mothers. we have been telling their story. i think the generation to come, will be telling stories of living here. it will be different stories

i needed to do radio. i need to be quiet and listen to this. she said you have working history of politics and government, and i said yes, i do. the first show that i did have to do with tom hartman and two he was, i have a lot of respect for him. today in washington, it doesn't matter how tom would be classified, he is there. and he knows the journalism. he is such an accomplished author and i have been able to see some of his books. we did the show. it really went well. we did our own show for a little bit. that was the interesting thing to do. so i continued to do talk radio and i ventured over to india for a little bit. what do you when you want to recharge her batteries? i had a chapter in this book is it about five to seven minutes from the tibetans. it provided me the opportunity to write this book. because i was able to go there for a couple of months and then come back in between, you know from watching my granddaughter and the recovery program. i was able to write this book and it was absolutely amazing. i was able to change this and i never thought i would do above, but my cousin, i always told the republicans that he coined

i used to run rampant through there and have fun. and when i was younger. and one of the reasons i support it is because i think when i first came to mason, when i first came on mason street, it was real vibrant. it was, they even had a little buritto store right there and a bunch of other things there. but, i want to support this, but i also to make a neighborhood better. sometimes you have to put a lot of effort into it and so what i started doing is i got into this with the people that do graffiti removal and i adopted a (inaudible) and the second (inaudible) and so i would go out like once a week or twice a week and make a difference. because i think that if they see neighbors actually living in the neighborhood doing things on those blocks. you know, just cleaning some things, or whatever, you don't have to confront them or anything like that. just, sometimes you have to just take back a street. and then because the police presence there it really works on the corner there because i live at 12 turk and i think that the presence of the neighbors would really move them along because we are seeing that we are taking black

when i go to my parents house and look outside of the living room window, i think wow, that's the largest solar project and our office was there. whenever i think of how i first learned how to ride a bicycle, i remember how my parents supported our businesses. they bought our first bicycle. right now i spend so much time with the businesses our district. at the same time, i'm so glad that place that i went to an as child are still there. so as we talk about job creation and economics situation of the city, i hope to continue to work with local merchants. i think of how we are so lucky to be able to work with the beach. when we talk about access to our district and public transportation, i think about my experience writing unigrowing up. there was no 311. unihas made improvements. more needs to be done to help residents who have the largest commute to the city. one of the parents called our office distressed about the school system. i was lucky to be able to walk to and from school with my friends. i'm so proud to be a product of the public education and the san francisco unified school drink district. as you can see i have a hard time separating my personal l

i was a block and a half away. i saw the smoke. i heard that kind of explosion before in my time and i knew it was obviously not a good thing. so my firstction obviously i you just saw my wife and kids and i tried to get ahold of them. there was no cell coverage for 30 minutes. it took half an hour to get ahold of them. your emotions boil over. they went from, sorrow to grieve, quite honestly to anger. start thinking about, just making you sick, what kind of person would, what kind of evil person would do souch a -- such a cowardly thing to put bombs next to kids and elderly people. i'm a military vet and i've seen some terrible stuff but this is really evil. gerri: your family was okay, i understand it. they were not injured. did you move once you found out what was going to help people in the streets? >> i was in a cordoned off area. what i saw was the amazing response from the first-responders. police officers got on the phone right away to direct emergency help there. i saw the ambulances screaming over there fast. it was an amazing response that was literally instantaneous from when i heard the explosions. and when i saw the smoke
