nbc news's chris palone is going to join us now live. you're looking at pictures there of watertown, massachusetts. these are live pictures. dawn is just starting to break in the region after tragic events starting last night just after 10:00 p.m. and cambridge, massachusetts. that's where a car jacking and the killing of an m.i.t. campus officer led to a chase that apparently ended up in watertown. one suspect confirmed killed. one on the run. both linked to the boston marathon. so, chris, nbc news's chris palone joining us live. what's the latest you can tell us this morning? >> sure. very chaotic and can fluid situation over in watertown, massachusetts, about eight miles west of downtown boston. from what we're being told, police are blocking off at least a 20-block area in watertown. they're using transit buses to remove residents. they're telling people to shelter in place if they are in that area, meaning stay in their homes. lock their doors. do not come to the door. call 911 if somebody approaches the door or verify that it is a

this is the third or fourth potential opening i've seen where frank palone has been mentioned.ts now for so long with no upward movement and kept people sort of below them from moving up a few wrungs and ending up in this situation. >> is some of this -- the other part of this, is some of this when jon corzine came in and basically bought off the new jersey democratic party, you know, and so many ways to sort of become a u.s. senator and then eventually governor, did that end up dwarving the growth of the democratic party oddly at least among some individuals? >> i really believe that the biggest reason that chris christie was in position to benefit so much politically from sandy and other things that happened the last four years, the reason he was able to win in 2009 is because of the new jersey democratic party, it really goes back to jon corzine running for the u.s. senate and buying that nomination in 2000 when frank lautenberg left the first time. what happened was he basically spread money all around the state, county, municipal democratic leaders. he did very poorly in t

nbc's chris palone is in boston with the latest. good morning, chris.hat do you know this morning? >> reporter: good morning, betty. it has been a week since the bombing and in the city of boston people coming together over the weekend to try to offer each other healing and in the wake of what's happened in the city. many continuing to heal in local hospitals, as well. the latest information we have is that 52 people are still being treated for their injuries. at least three are still in critical condition. as we mentioned lots of memorial services here in boston over the weekend. yesterday morning boston's catholic leader cardinal sean o'malley said mass and it included ed davis. near boylston street people came out to pay their respects and to leave mementos at that makeshift memorial. that's the story in boston. i'm chris pollone, back to you, betty. >>> five were shot in a washington state apartment complex. it happened in federal way around 9:30 local time last night. one suspect was shot and killed by a responding officer, so far, the motive is st
