in the short terp, the deficit to the right at fiscal policy to have, we talked about this a second ago, none of the other inputs of gdp are spending any money. right? not creating any activity. so at this point, the government running a deficit is exact the right thing that you would be running it in my slew a bigger deficit. it is a longer term issue. 2017 and 2020 and beyond. if you want to talk about deficit reduction but anything short-term is hurting rather than helping losing not creating jobs. >> the deficit has been going down? >> yeah. this year, it's going to be at least $600,000,000,000 less, less than it would otherwise be. >> because of the sequester? >> no. the sequester is one. because of the tax increases we put in place because of the budget control act and the 1.2 trillion that was, you know, that would be started there. but compared to 1.4 trillion a few years ago, it's going to be about 800 billion this year. half of that is cyclical, a result of economic -- the economy not performing terribly well. if it was performing well and the unemployment was a bit lower, the

ago, terps. it is a privilege and honor to be here today to speak to all of you and to be back on campus in college park. to give you a little more context, i spent 8.5 years on the committee, starting as a professional staff economist and becoming chief economist for the senator, the longest serving senator for the great state of maryland during my tenure in the senate. left, i stayed on and was asked to stay on by the incoming chairman, senator chris dodd. i had the great honor of serving as his economist through 2007 when he took over the committee, through 2009. then, in the beginning of 2009 with the incoming obama administration, i got a fantastic increase -- opportunity to go to the treasury department. in all my career, there is something special about serving your home state senator. i am in maryland. i served for a great senator from maryland. there is a value that everybody gets in their lives from giving back to their community, whether you define it as your state, your nation, your c
