when did capital city clean up start? it was launched in 2005 as a pilot program focused on litter reduction in the downtown of edmonton. basically businesses were asked to adopt a block in their area and were responsible for litter clean up in that area and the program had such a huge success that they expanded the program in 2006 to include a residential component for litter pick-up. we now have over a thousand adopt a block captains that are responsible for adopting blocks around the city of edmonton for picking up litter and they each have crews of 4 to 5 thousand people so so we have four to five thousand people picking up litter. we link nonprofit organizations with businesses and the businesses pay the nonprofit organizations $650 per summer to have the nonprofits pick up litter in the blocks surrounding their business. the advantage to that is, again, community responsibility. they're not just picking up litter at the businesses, they are picking up litter in the surrounding blocks. we have a school litter reducti

the sun has come up here. we are dealing with some dropping temperatures and some driving rain and firefighters and officials have told us that they are still in a recovery and rescue mode and without question, this weather is probably going to hamper that somewhat. the scene is about a mile or so to the north of where we are here at this volunteer fire department a place where a lot of the very first responders left from this area to get to the fire that was reported up at that scene. as the sun comes up, we are going to just now start getting a real good look at the extent of the damage, which we were in the immediate area a couple of hours after the blast last night. the term leveled is accurate. the scene is similar to what we see after a tornado except instead of a small swath of damage, it's widespread. walls and roofs have collapsed and it looks like that for blocks around the damage zone so extensive damage and crews some of them really now just starting to get an idea of the full extent of the damage
