we have macy's, starbucks, google and mastercard. they are all part of this today. we had banks looking very strong as well. bank of america, citigroup, goldman sachs, wells fargo, those names are all moving higher. analysts that we spoke with say there is no fundamental reason for today's move other than good old fashioned momentum. we are not going to say it was our interview.

mastercard cited a "choppy economy" for its results. the company missed on revenue estimates. over at time warner, slow sales of magazines and movies kept revenue flat. however, its ceo said it's off to a strong start in the first quarter. phillips 66 was the silver lining of the day. rising oil prices helped the company's profits double. sales are springing forward for u.s. automakers. april was the strongest month since 2007, with gm, ford and chrysler all posting double-digit gains on the backs of a surge in truck and suv sales. ford sales rose 17.9%, gm and chrysler both had 11% growth. honda sales were also up by 7.4%. toyota slipped 1.1%, while volkwagen was off by 10%. it must be celebration time, because investors are turning to sin stocks. the consumers staples sector is up 4% - that includes beer and spirit stocks like anheuser busch inbev, diageo and beam incorporated. the reason? more drinkers in emerging markets are toasting with western spirits and beer. and, customers tend to be very loyal to their drink of choice. drugmaker stocks turned into eye-poppers on wal

top retailers are suing visa and mastercard over inflated swipe fees. macy's, target and 15 other retailers are opting out of a $7.2-billion settlement that would have ended litigation against the card companies. instead, they're suing. other retailers, including jc penney, kohl's, and tjx companies, say the settlement is "inadequate" and protects the card companies from future antitrust lawsuits. visa and mastercard are not commenting, but have said in the past that they're confident the settlement will get final court approval. here's a way to keep the shelves stocked: tie executive pay to keep the shelves full. that's the way it may go at wal-mart. bloomberg earlier reported that a reduction in workers had made it harder to keep stores fully stocked, something shoppers like to see and something wal- mart was known for. with in- store sales slipping, the word from headquarters is now "keep 'em full, or else." specifically, if managers and certain executives can't keep store shelves brimming, they may have their pay cut. that's one of several compensat

. ♪ >> let's get to mary thompson who has the latest on mastercard's conference call. >> interestingments from the company's ceo. he says the economic environment is mixed. they're maintaining a cautious outlook on the environment as they have throughout the year and they're not changing their outlook for 2014. a little bit of color on what they saw from the consumer in the first quarter. they said consumer spending in the u.s. was sta strong at the start of the year and started to cool in february as concerns of higher taxes and some of the economic data had an impact on consumer confidence. he did say with housing prices improving that could translate into higher spending. however, he did say that the outlook for the second quarter in the u.s. looks, quote, dodgy. in europe he said growth in europe is slow ask mixed. we develop countries and seeing higher spending there with some of the e merging markets in europe or developing markets in europe. in asia, consumer confidence is improving. however, he did say that the outlook for china is mixed right now and that will have imp impli

it seems like this is going to be far harder to track down and stop that was to go to visa and mastercardou're -- there are hundreds of these current systems out there online, aren't there? >> more importantly, the crimea has noticed that most of the major organized criminal systems in the world and develop tanking components and using these virtual currency anonymous payment systems to basically barter and trade, the national secrets that were hacked. dennis: i see. to his seems that even with these anonymous digital cash systems, at some point on the front-end you have to take some form of real money and paid to some anonymous system to then turn and into these digital points of some kind. have you been able to get back to the original front-end source until mike credit card company not to do that? >> it is very difficult to do. and the reason is that it is virtually impossible to track. digital currencies are not sanctioned by any government. they're not tied to any central bank. this is literally a kind of internet based barter system. so the challenge is to create enough infrastructu

of it handled visa and mastercard prepaid debit cards.hey liked 12 of those card accounts, they deleted the spending limits on them. that allowed them to take a huge amount of cash off them. they made phony cards with the numbers of those accounts and then passed the cards out to a network of thieves. those teams of crooks then went to atm's with the fake cards to scoop up the cash. in just a few hours, jenna, as you said, thieves around the globe made 36,000 transactions, so they shopped with the cards, and then they withdrew more than $40 million in cash from the atm's. of course when teams of people get to the cash machines this is what you get, pictures, because there are cameras at those machines. in new york city alone a team of eight people made 2900 withdrawals stealing $2.4 million. here is a picture that was released by the u.s. attorney's office in new york city. they say it shows a man dent need as defendant reyes hitting manhattan cash machines. here is the map with the targeted locations that surveillance photos of the suspe

i don't think you introduced yourself, but with mastercard, i believe. so i think in financial services, financial services has been hesitant to start incorporating this social data absent some very vanilla, benign uses, and i think that's the right approach. and so i don't know that there's been, there's been any issue to sort of gal galvanize perspectie from the cfpb about. definitely it's something they're focused on, and should people start using this to make decisions about creditworthiness or something hike that, then we -- like that, then we certainly could see a position for it. >> yeah. and, certainly, that's not an area that we have any touch to now and don't, i don't anticipate us trying to delve into that arena because i do think that there are, that's a whole other pandora's box to get your head -- that we would have to get our heads around, and legislators need to get their heads around and regulators need to get their heads around. and so, you know, from our perspective that's determining one's creditworthiness based on social media is a -
