month. the 200,000 barrier is important. that is a number that needs to be created to see significant reductions in on appointment rate and to make sure the recovery will be able to one day be self-sustaining. at 200 thousand a month figure is really important. host: here is a chart that was provided. it shows the private sector payrolls employment starting from 2008 through today. the big change here going from jobs gains coming in the spring of 2010. talk about the idea of a spring slump. it is something we heard a bit of concern about after those margin numbers. what is a spring slump? guest: it is something that economists use to refer to the idea that there was a lot of momentum over the winter. pattern that we see in the jobs data over the past two years. you see a lot of that to the and the construction. .omehow something happens you get to march come april, may, those numbers start to decline again. we thought we were in that same pattern again this year. when we saw the march numbers come out, people say, this is indicative that the economy is slowing down. in addition, he also had that sort of sequester looming ahead. this will certainly

i think people feel we should be at this point in the recovery around 300,000 a month. expect from the recovery at this point in the cycle? >> certainly, if you want to be really repairing the damage that's been done, you need numbers like get so, absolutely, you want get and we certainly wish we were seeing it. >> let me ask you your take on these revisions. why all the revisions? can we trust these numbers? how come they're constantly getting revised? >> you think the numbers come from a sample and any time you take a sample. there's sampling error. i think part of what, you know, what we face as a country is the there's kind of a cost benefit calculation. we could get more accurate numbers if we took a bigger sample. a bigger sample costs more money. most of the time the revisions are fairly moderate. they don't sort of mess up our decision-making and our policy making. you know, sometimes they are much more of a problem. i think back to the fall of 2008 when our numbers were off by hundreds of thousands and really did i think mess up people, policy-makers didn't know

what do you think about how the recovery has been going the last several months and what do you thinkthe jersey shore? >> reporter: it is. i think the prospect of a full recovery there is fairly strong. i will say that. the concert this morning definitely brightened up what was a bleary morning. good as new. you walk down it, you smell funnel cakes, french fries, the shops are filling up their shelves and a lot of the sign say standing strong through the storm. a lot of it branding in terms of restoring the brand of the shore to withstand something like sandy. the beaches are thinner. there are no rides on the shore and of course, it is unclear how safe some people would feel getting into that water. governor christie at another ceremony on monday of this week said all the jersey shore should be restored by next summer. but the priority here is to get the businesses and some of those central hubs reopened so people feel like the shore, at least part of it, has returned to normal. >> i swear you gain like five pounds just down the boardwalk. just walking. you smell the funnel cakes. yo

about cheap money, steven, the fed pumped $85 billion into the economy every single month. 85 billion. driving the recovery in the stock market, the housing market, haven't seen the same recovery in jobs. won't the slow jobs recovery ultimately be bad news for housing and stocks? >> well, look, first of all, make the case when you have dollar 15,000, unqualified great news for the economy, the argument is made only half americans have a little money in the stock market and only half of americans are benefitting and what i would say about that, christine, which is really the crux of the issue is what we need to do as we move forward in this 21st century is get -- is become much more of an investor,/owner society so every american can benefit from the wealth gains that are engendered by a rising stock market and it means we should have more expand the 401(k) plans, make it a lot easier for people to invest in the market as a way to get rich. i have talked for many years on this show and others why not finally allow young and lower income americans to take some of their social security money and put it into p
