here's part one of my exclusive conversation with kristen beck. don't think most people can imagine what it's like to feel like you are in disguise, to feel like you are not in the body you were meant to be in. you're not the gender you're meant to be. did you feel that way always? you would feel like that all the time constantly? >> it is a constant, but as you suppress it and bottle it up, it's not like on the surface so maybe i can put it back a few different layers so it's not like, you would never notice it because i can push it so deep. but then it does kind of like, it gnaws at you. it's always there. >> how would you let off steam, let off pressure? you said you would go to sometimes victoria's secret? >> yeah. i would go to victoria's secret and buy something because it's easy, i could say yes, close to valentine's day was the best day to buy stuff at victoria's secret because there's a lot of guys there buying things for their girlfriend. i would bring it home and wear it and then you have to purge because you couldn't have anything layi

this is chris beck before and then this is kristen beck now. g life as a woman was impossible while the dream the u.s. navy s.e.a.l.s. a reputation for having the toughest, fittest and most secretive forces in the u.s. military. beck realized that dream serving for 20 years with the s.e.a.l.s in some of the most dangerous battle grounds around the world including iraq and afghanistan. a former navy s.e.a.l. who new beck said he had a stellar reputation among his comrades. by the time he retired in service in 2011, beck had a long list of medals and commendations including the bronze star and the purple heart. for 20 years while beck was fighting for his country, he was also fighting an inner battle. a battle over his gender identity. chris beck wanted to live his life openly and honestly as a woman, which is what he started doing after he retired in 2011. chris beck is now kristen beck. she's currently on hormone replacement therapy and feels like she's becoming the person she was always meant to be. it's been a long journey for kristen to get t

anderson cooper, cnn. >> and kristen beck spoke with anderson about keeping the desire to be a woman bottled up. listen. >> it's got to be so -- just sad to think that for 20 years you have to -- that you have this incredible bond with these people you're fighting with, and you want it to be the closest bond imaginable and yet you can't really let yourself be yourself. >> it's definitely tough. it's -- i mean, it's strength and honor. when we shake hands, you know, we shake hands and we say strength and honor. and that's still what i gave true. i gave true brotherhood. i did my best. 150% all the time. and i gave strength and honor and my full brotherhood to every military person i ever worked with. and i feel that pretty much any transgender person that's in the military right now -- and there's a lot of them right now probably doing service, they're doing the same thing. and you would never know that they're transgender or anything. it's just too bad because they're doing a great job. and nobody even knows it. >> what would have happened if you had said to some of the s.e.a.l.s. yo

turns out her name is now kristen beck. he's had a full transgender. and everyone wishes her well.omething you could never have imagined being talked about publicly probably even ten years ago in america. and it comes on the day that you have the cutest couple in a suburban ny high school, brad taylor and dylan meehan. you wouldn't imagine that being publicly displayed like this even ten years ago. do these two stories today, two completely different stories, but joined if you like by the sense of isn't it great that in modern america now quite rapidly actually we can celebrate both those things and it seems relatively normal? >> days before the u.s. supreme court will rule on two important gay rights cases, the dohmann case and the prop 8 case about whether, you know, some of these laws will be overturned, you have, by the way, 120 -- 222 republican legislators across the country have voted for freedom to marry, transgender, bisexual rights. this really is in the middle of a gay civil rights movement in the country. >> i agree. and this is beautiful. the great thing about the two

chris beck is now kristen beck, and feels like she's becoming the person she was always meant to be. it's been a long journey to get to this point. she's written a book about her experience called "warrior princess princess." it comes after the u.s. department of defense repealed its don't ask, don't tell, but gender identity has nothing to do with sexuality. the combat veteran would not be allowed to serve in the military as she lives her life today. how far back have you felt like this? >> i would say since grade school. i remember in third grade especially that i would look over toward my sisters and i would always want to be my older sister, heather. she was like that shining example, and it was like, i wish so much that i was more like that. and it was always just something deep inside of me that i felt that way. >> a lot of people don't understand that gender is different than sexuality. what was the feeling, even as a child, what was the feeling? >> that's -- it's so hard to explain. that's why there's still so much controversy, each within the medical doctors and everybody el
