we don't have the proposition 8 ruling yet. but based on what the descenters are saying in the doma case, it appears what everyone predicted is going to happen. that the supreme court will say that the people who brought the prop 8 case to the supreme court had no legal standing. that will mean that same-sex marriage can resume in california. it will be a decision affecting only california. it won't say anything about whether other states have to recognize same-sex marriage. so we have a bit of a prediction here based on the descent. >> is that what you read into this, kenji? >> i haven't read, so i'm just going off pete's report. one of the things that was predicted was that the court would say, this case may or may not be mare torous. this is a challenge to california's ban on same-sex marriage. you're not the right people to bring it. because like president obama, governor schwarzenegger said he would enforce but not defend. >> they could essentially bring back same-sex marriage to california if that's the case within weeks.

this is the future and it's now. >> within six months of the speech, proposition 8 was on the ba bal -- ballot and now a new ruling from the highest court in the nation. tara moriarty is live at san francisco city hall with reaction from the man many helped focus -- focus attention on this issue. good afternoon, tara moriarty. >> reporter: good afternoon, we have seen a lot of couples go into the courthouse to get married and in less than a month, it will be gay couples tying the knot. it's called a spine-tingling moment. >> my reaction was just tears when he saw them walking down the steps. >> reporter: moments after the u.s. supreme court struck down prop 8, san francisco mayor ed lee, lieutenant-governor, gavin newsom and phyllis lie un, the first gay person to get married here in city hall walked down the steps to bask in the moment. >> it feels good to have livetry up of over ignorance. >> reporter: cheers filled the rotunda. >> it's great. this is really amazing. >> now we'll get married in california and we'll get recognized on the federal level. this is a big day for us. >> r

we are still a place dedicated to the proposition that individuals should be encouraged to explore the world by learning by doing and thinking for themselves. it was started in the cold war by frank for the idea that people need to think for themself and the world will be bet foreit. what we need now is just as much spirit and exporatorium will support that going forward. . >> the waiting is almost over from shasta to san diego, county clerks are bracing for the ruling on proposition eight, especially in san francisco at city hall where the gay pride flag is flying this morning. joy and matt have been engaged in two months but have no wedding plans waiting for the supreme court ruling on proposition 8 which could come this morning. several things could happen. justices could uphold the proposition, the same-sex marriage ban. they could also strike it down. employees at city hall will be glued to their computers. the rueing is the culmination of a ten-year legal battle. >> we want to get married here with our friends and connections here but we cannot if it is not legal. >> i am optimistic but if we lose i am optimistic california voters are ready to go back to the ballot and take it out. >> if the supreme court rules on proposition 8 the decision would be posted online at 7:00 a.m. pacific. if that happens san francisco city attorney will come out and make comments. if it is struck down, bodyings could start happening here in san francisco in 25 days. >> stay with

we are here to rule on the supreme court's ruling on the defense of marriage act and proposition 8. votes of ad the bipartisan majority of congress. this is a dangerous precedent which tips power away from on the national marriage policy. we must work to defend the right of americans to make marriage policy. additionally, the proposition 8 decision is a loss for those who have voiced their support as marriage between one man and one woman. they abandoned the people of california and. with the supreme court denying standing, they have left people voiceless. -- supreme court that marriagerm exists between a man and a woman and is a necessary building block of a stable society. the debate over marriage will continue with states leading the way. we must defend the right of americans to make policy. we must promote marriage between one man and one woman. we up all the reality that every child deserves a mom and a dad. society as a whole benefits as they do. and now we have statements by some of our other members here. first, steve so lease from louisiana. >> it's a sad day when unelected

a couple of things i want to highlight as the person who authorize the proposition a that created the budgeting two year process, i appreciate and i'm glad that this is a process that i think now a couple years in has been working in helping us to manage our finances. i want to take a moment as someone who is in his district with the north beach clubhouse that has been closed for two years and we looked around the city and we had clubhouses that we closed, but we decided we need to open a clubhouse in each of our districts and move that forward. i want to thaveng the support to move forward with pilots on budgeting and plan nothing that area. i want to thank the mayor also for working with us to increase a little bit of funding to ethics enforcement and then i think one thing that i'm always proud of the board of supervisors is doing is looking out and making sure the city of saint francis has a really robust social services and whether it's for aids services and i can't agree more with how important it is to come together and make sure we reverse terrible cuts coming from other place
