have you heard of a tail coming off of a plane coming off as it is landing? >>, no i would not.ould caution the viewers, early eyewitness reports are frequently wrong. just because people are really -- they really don't understand what they are watching and not prepared to see what they are going to see. if you look at that debris field, that seems like -- if the tail came off the debris field was moving forward down the runway. it's also curious the faa is saying that the aircraft was scheduled to land at a different runway and it shifted at the last minute. >> heather: what do you mean. if the tail of the plane came off, repeated san francisco international airport. this is the wreckage of an asiana jet airliner, a boeing 777 that crashed while landing and then you could see the burn damage, caused by a fire that hit the top part of the plane. we don't know how many people have been injured. we know of no fatalities. of course we were just talking to scott brenner who suggested that his information everybody got out safely which heather is, that is remarkable. >> heather: i'm

it is incredible most of the people got off.ichard, i do have to say for someone who flies a lot, a lot of people watching fly a lot. this is very heartening to know that, you know, you can survive in a situation like this. >> oh, absolutely. i think you and i talked about it earlier, but i'm going to go through the numbers earlier. the aircraft is certified that it can get everybody off the plane within 90 seconds with half the doors inoperable. so very basic. they work on that basis. as you see from this particular incident, the right side of the aircraft was worse damage. that was where the fire was. so you didn't really want to open the doors on the right, so the plane is designed, but you've got to take some care for yourself. you've got to know where the emergency exit is. personally i mentally count so i know roughly whether it's before or behind me, and you've got to be -- you don't obviously try and take your belongings. there are some pictures here suggesting some people did. the plane is designed that you can get out

the off ramp. police did not block off the exit from 880. that's the opening that the protestors used to get on the freeway. it is hard to say exactly how many of them are up there. you have a better view than i do with news chopper 2. as i mention aboutes of officer right here that dashed up. i can see very little traffic , the occasional vehicles that does drive by seem to be going at a fair rate of speed. so again protestors still there i am watching are walking back down the off ramp, they decided to make their point on the freeway and are coming back down and i am looking at two officers escorting somebody down who is in handcuffs right now. i can tell you at least one person in custody and that's the first sign that i see police are coming back from the freeway. and then another half dozen or so on foot who are also starting to walk up the off ramps. looks like police are starting to go up there and make arrest. >> i hate to interrupt you, we are now covering this coverage of breaking news in

the tail broke off the plane. the fuselage at the top, you can see partially burned, most of it is gone, and as you look at this picture right now, you can see there is no tail section, there is no rudder on this plane. we did see the emergency slides deploy as well. and we're getting all sorts of new information here as well. i'm being told just at the top of the hour in just a few minutes there's going to be a press conference in san francisco. there's going to be another press conference at the bottom of the hour at 5:30 eastern time from washington and the faa. we can also tell you this, a national security officials tells cnn there are no signs of terrorism from this crash, that flights have been canceled in and out of san francisco's international airport. many of them because it's a large airport have been diverted to l.a.x., i know there are other airports that are closer, but l.a.x. is a much bigger airport and can absorb some of the plane -- some of the planes and flights that are coming in more readily

and it was going to be off for a period of time for repair. but the glide path alone, that's simply one of a number of devices that the -- that the flight crew uses to assist them in landing. and, you know, there are hundreds of landings that were taking place on that runway without the glide path that did not run into trouble. so i think we'll move beyond that fairly quickly. >> something that is really eerie, let's take a look at tape from 2008. same plane. 777. heathrow. british air lands just short of the runway. that was caused, they believed, by ice pellets that clogged the fuel line. the engine suddenly couldn't get any fuel and it slammed right down on the heathrow runway just short of that. very similar to this. any possibility, you think, that the same thing could have happened? do we know what type of engines there were on this plane? they apparently corrected what happened at heathrow. >> yeah. the engines at heathrow were rolls-royce trent engines. and you're right. they determined that it flew through a really severely cold porti
