rachel kagan with san francisco general hospital and trauma center. ism giving you the 5:00 update on the patients from the asiana airlines accident here at san francisco general. our grand total so far today is now 34 patients. of those patients, 11 are children. and 23 are adults. we have five in critical condition from the original ten you may recall that at the 2:00 update we had ten critically injured patients. five of those remain critically injured. five -- the other five have been upgraded to serious. for the rest of the group, getting up to a grand total of 34. we do not have conditions breakdowns yet. they are being assessed and we do know their injuries vary. they not all of them will be admitted. some are in good condition and they will be treated and released. some will have more serious injuries. and will be admitted. we have had three waves of patients today. the first ten people critically injured. then 17 people with a mixture of injuries. and then seven people also with a mixture of injuries. again, 34 total. 11 children and 23 adults

he's being treated at san francisco general hospital.when police responded to the call of shots fired, they encountered a man covered in blood. he fired at officers and officers did not have weapons drawn so took cover. the suspect ran into a mexican fire. police say he fired again, and this time they did not fire back because there were too many people around. the suspect ran out of bullets and surrendered. a code 406 went out over the police radio, meaning officer needs help. so police agencies from all over san francisco responded. >> i saw a policeman crouch next to my car with his gun sort of pointed in my direction. you know, not really at me, but in my direction. so i just ran very quickly and then hid in one of the stores there. >> reporter: scary moments for people in this neighborhood, inside that jewelry mart and outside. police say no police officers were hurt and no innocent bystanders were hurt. just the two women inside the store were kid, one man wounded and the suspect was covered with blood. once the suspect was arreste

numbers we talked about. 18 patients and those are spread across 11 bay area hospitals one being san francisco generalonly level one trauma center here that services 1 million people from all of san francisco to san mateo county and what i can tell you. the hospital treated 52 people, 26 children, 27 adults and we know now that six people have been allowed to leave the hospital but there are six people in critical condition at last count and there are all sorts of injuries, but, of course when you have patients in critical condition there's always going to be a lot of condition as to how they fare and that's what we know from this hospital. stanford which is about 45 minutes to drive south of here, stanford hospital had at least 45 patients and doctors there had said about three or four hours ago that there were 45 patients tan there some with li life-threatening injury but didn't say how many critical. bumps, bruises, broken bones and spinal injuries and those are obviously going to be extremely difficult for the doctors to deal with and foch the patients to deal with and you know with spinal injurie
