and more thunderstorms are possible in the southwest today. you can see this area of low pressure swirling out in the southwest that is producing some of these pop-up showers and storms each afternoon and evening. some could be strong enough to produce significant hail and also lightning which is a huge concern with the wildfire threat out in the southwest because it is so hot and dry. you can see most of those showers fade away overnight and then redevelop through the afternoon. so that is something we'll keep an eye on across interior parts of the southwest. especially into areas like new mexico and into arizona as well. that excessive heat warning is shrinking. now it's mostly in areas of southern california where it is still going to be extremely hot. but in las vegas and phoenix, temperatures, although still very warm, up around 107, 108, it is much closer to average. so that is more typical for this time of the year. we should be in the lower 70s in parts of seattle. that's a l prescott, arizona. so talking about temperatures, 105 to 110

a southwest monsoon is causing persisting drenching rains in thailand. in chanthaburi prorinse two people including a 9-year-old boy have died in flood-related accidents. roads have been inundated with tens of thousands of people affected. returning to the satellite picture, you can see that we've got rain clouds covering much of the indo-china peninsula. this is due to the southwest monsoonal flow pounding the coastal areas with rainfall. that includes chanthaburi as well. we're looking at more rain which means higher risk of further flooding and landslides. we'll keep a very close eye on this. and to the bigger picture, an upp upper cold sitting here at the china and russia border. it is bringing thunderstorms, hail and gusts are possible. the system is affecting northern japan and thunderstorms on the severe side could be possible, even tornadic activity, sudden burst of showers could be possible into the next 24 hours here across the northern half of much of this country. in between these two systems, this is the high pressure system sitting here. do

>> yes, catherine, this year the southwest monsoon is very active. so we are seeing more than average rainfall for many years, particularly in the western parts of the indo-china peninsula. numerous reports of landslides as well as flooding. but unfortunately, no relief is in sight. for the foreseeable future. we're expecting more than 150 millimeters of rain for the west coast. more than 200 millimeters for southern parts of the indo-china peninsula. more disastrous conditions could happen, unfortunately. and you'll notice another area of heavy rain can be found across the western parts of the philippines. and this is do you ue to a trop depression, enhancing the southwest monsoon. and actually, the monsoon is enhancing the upper-level high pressure which is called a tibetan high which is resulting in extremely high temperatures for the south and central parts of china, parts of the korean peninsula as well as japan. we have heat warnings and advisories posted for many areas. shanghai, the highs have been over 38 degrees over the past several days.
