city college of san francisco. as a student i've been part of this city college for two years. i just recently finished all my studies last semester. but, you know, like a lot of things are happening here, you know, there are a lot of problems in city college like we have bathrooms that haven't been fixed. we have -- [speaker not understood]. we also have a lot of resistance in terms like a couple years ago we had our resource center being requested by undocumented students and, you know, it was really sad to walk in the halls and see people that weren't smiling at me really hurt, a lot of hypocracy. because at that point at that moment, those people were the ones that were accessing the [speaker not understood] resource center and now they are like here trying -- because they're losing their jobs, saying that you know, they're advocating for students of color when at that point they weren't advocating for it. the second point is at that moment to [speaker not understood] we were fighting for entrance for low-incom

college if saving city college means having a city college that no longer looks like what city college has been. so, supervisor avalos talked about the language programs. it's the adult education classes, the job training programs, the work force development initiatives. it's the second chance programs for formerly incarcerated youth. it is the bet van center that helps so many vets not only get training, get jobs. it's the guardian scholars programs that serves former foster care students with academic and nonacademic support. it's the programs addressing senior help. it's helping students transfer to four-year colleges. it's preserving lower cost higher education can which is -- city college is the only way that so many low-income folks can go to college. it's maintaining the special community-based campuses like mission campus in my district that serves 8500 students, 70% of whom are immigrants. i do think that we need to continue these hearings and i will end with this, that my hope and what i would like to do as the district 9 supervisor is at the next hearing that we have -- and

why did you choose to stay in the city >> i love the city. i'm very passionate about the city.on to focus on children and the families. i keep on asking the same question when i was younger why would i want to focus my efforts in san francisco. are there other places in the world where i could make a difference. i'm talking about the late 50s and 60s. there was at that time, a lot of population coming in from china. it was an opportunity for me to help people that were struggling in awe second amendment and getting used to things over here. >> what motivated you to get involved in politics. >> part of my motivation i guess you have to look at where i started. i as i mentioned he earlier i wanted to help people and at the time it was children and family. after many, many years of serving people i realized in providing services that somehow, i have to impact the decision-makers so i started advocating on issues i cared about. i was somewhat effective and wouldn't it be nice if i could do something different i ran an organization for 20 years. i felt i needed to grow as much as th

one thing the city of san francisco or big cities or federal, right, the other smaller cities, smaller cities have smaller budgets. having a structure to support all this open data takes a lot of money. so, when these small cities are thinking about this, they should think about a way of somehow equalizing because they are putting into having these open data team, right? so, what does make sense? this is kind of an open question to get your point of view. >> do you want to take that, shannon? >> i think that there is actually quite ah few examples. we can probably talk to this more with smaller cities that are making open data efforts. but what i would say is that it's proven more than the value of the investment. the return that we've gotten just by opening up the data has actually given back more. so, that would be my short answer to it, but i think you probably have more experience working directly with some of the cities. >> so, i grew up in a small city so i care about small cities a lot, 15,000 people, southern illinois. i'm a card nastionv fan. -- cardinals fan. i should say tha

we have corridors of our city yet to be connected up so that when anybody comes in to the city, whether they're visiting from another state or whether they're from another country, they'll know that this city reflects the innovative spirit when they arrive at the airport, when they arrive at the port or they arrive on muni. they'll know we're all connected up. so, again, i want to say thank you to supervisor farrell and his staff for shepherding this, for all the departments that have worked collaboratively with google and our sf city, our citizens initiative for technology and innovation. they are an incredible group of people. and, by the way, i've been told now they sport 600 members and they're still growing. i wouldn't be surprised that they will now comprise the majority of the over 1800 technology firms that exist in san francisco. and they want to do more and they want to join all of our neighborhoods to do more to improve life in our city for everybody. so, thank you to everyone on this wonderful effort. now, may i present to you the host for district 11 and someone who we were

and importantly, it will cost the city nothing. the city won't have to buy the land. it won't have to build the infrastructure. and it will not have to pay the city upkeep going forward. emerald park will be a unique arrangement between the san francisco parks alliance and emerald fund. with an agreement known as the conservation easement that will ensure that forever this remains the public open space. and emerald fund by this agreement will forever give up its right to develop this land. park alliance will be a steward to make sure this remains a public open space. i moved to san francisco 16 years ago. i met my lovely wife here. we had both of our children here. and we used to live right in this building right behind us for many years. and i can tell you from firsthand experience there are very few parks around here, very few parks for children to run around in. and that's why saline and i decided to make this gift. when all these buildings we talk about are complete, there will be thousands of new families around here, thousands. and this park is needed now and wi

in city hall. our next meeting is august 14th at 11:00 a.m. in city hall room 201. this meeting is open to the public, publicly noticed with an agenda and noticed 72 hours before each meeting. state legislation committees, state legislation committee meetings, those overarching state legislative agendas as well as specific legislative proposals are considered. and i'll go into what both of those are. generally in the earlier months of the year, january and february before the state legislation really kicks into gear, departments like the department of the environment will bring forward an overarching policy agenda for the committee to consider and hopefully endorse. so, these are general statements of policy. they're not reactive to a specific bill or proposal, but things that in any circumstance the department would like to see done. most departments do this. some of the larger proposals come from our department of public health. our human services agency. and those agencies that have most interaction with state legislators. in addition, as the year moves on and pa

we believe that both enhancement would support the city's -- what should be the city's goal that everyone wants a job should be provided with the support and opportunity to obtain one. thank you supervisors. >> honorable supervisors i am alex with the geneva house and the power house is 113 year old building in the city. for 13 years we have been turning it into a community center. it's now owned by the recreation and parks department and we have been defunded and we're asking that funding be restored. with the car barn we are able to do multitude of things for families and nonprofits in excessor which are needy which are leaving. a lot of families are leaving. families are leaving. i don't want them to go. i want my family to stay. if the car barn is an entity that can help them. it can offer resources -- for three and a half years we have been offering resources to youth. right now we have two college programs in the journalism department at city college and one at lake high school. i can tell you the need. we have so many applicants because excessior has the second most amount of youth

we've met in every district of the city. we've worked with our elected city family. we listened to hundreds of community leaders and providers who help us deliver services to the people of san francisco. and it's because of this consensus approach that i'm proud to propose a responsible and balanced two-year budget that reflects the core values that we share in san francisco, values of fiscal responsibility, social responsibility, and investing in our city's future. when we began this year's budget, we began like many years before, trying to reduce significant budget deficits. but because we have pursued policies to control costs, grow our economy, create jobs and stabilize our fiscal health, this year i'm proposing a budget that protects our social safety net, one that increases public safety, and one that invests in our city's infrastructure at unprecedented levels. and it is a budget that significantly grows our city's reserves. this budget is being delivered as san francisco's economy is recovering, going, and moving in the right direction. and san franciscans ar

(applause) >> all right. so, i'm up here to present the graffiti-watch volunteer award and the graffiti watch program is a program that started about four years ago. over 300 people enrolled in the program, and about 180 of very, very active people,. very, very active means those people go take time out of their busy day to go remove graffiti and make san francisco be graffiti-free. and in that 180 there are very, very few that get up early in the morning, early -- i mean, 3:00, 4 o'clock to go and make sure the neighborhood is clean before everybody wakes up to see a nice clean street or nice clean wall. and the awardee tonight and the winner is larry win ham, if he would come up and receive his award. a big thank you to him. and that's what new york city did. they first went to the hudson highlands, but 150 years later, it went to the delaware highlands. and really diverted the water that normally went to philadelphia to new york city. i don't think they anticipated that. narrator: the majority of new york city's drinking water comes from watersheds in upstate new york. a watershed is the area of land where water from rain or snow melt drains downhill into a body of water. mountains act as a funnel to feed rivers and lakes. and in this case, reservoirs. in the new york city system, water is collected and stored in 19 reservoirs, which can hold more than a year's supply -- over 580 billion gallons of water. almost all of the system is fed by gravity, without the use of energy-consuming pumps. valves open to regulate the flow into the 85-mile-long delaware aqueduct -- the longest tunnel in the world. at hillview reservoir... the water is partitioned into another giant tunnel system. where it travels deep below manhattan. the pressure built u

how do we count them in as residents of this city? and, so, we began on a very strong outreach program that depended upon service providers, to be quite candid. not just government agencies, but providers that sacrifice much of their time in the nonprofit world, surviving on very, very much foundational grants, foundational leaders who oftentimes were the only ones that heard the voices that we need help to really identify these folks because if it wasn't for them, we wouldn't have people coming out and telling us what diseases were causing them problems, what was spreading, what were the fears in our immigrant communities that were preventing them from participating, from not getting licenses, not accessing themselves to job opportunities, being perhaps caught up in underground economy. and you know what that leads to oftentimes is many problems that also may have challenges in our criminal justice system as well as our economics. but we wanted all of that to change. we for many years kids of immigrants, we always felt it was our dut

city college is a staple of education within the city. we don't only want to see city college saved. we want to see city college improved. we want to see city college addressing some of the historic issues of racial inequity, the achievement gap for students of color, especially african-american students, the amount of time that it takes students to graduate when they get into city college. so, we were really would like to see you take leadership in bringing the community together to build more support around saving city college, while most definitely including the fact we need to strive to improve the situations at city college that aren't working for students to make them successful. there's a lot of pressure to have a narrative that doesn't include equity and i want to most definitely make sure that as we continue to speak about this that we talk about equity. we put students at the center of the conversation and really make sure that it's guided by what's going to make sure students get the most out of their education at city college.

conference of mar and talk proudly of our diversity in this city, and how it helps me run this city. * mayors and now for lesbian, gay, and transgender individuals to take up the responsibilities and have the responsibility of other people's lives that they are responsible for in their official capacities, this would make mayor moscone and supervisor milk very proud of us. and in the week, perhaps less than a week, we have another historic opportunity for this country as we take up this opportunity of hopefully, we join together to see that marriage equality becomes the law of this land.
