"today in the bay's" danielle lee live on capitol hill with what else retailers are looking at. good morning, danielle. >> reporter: good morning, laura. the next time you make a return, you may want to check out your receipt. it could wash you your actions are being tracked. that's because thousands of retailers are hiring third party companies to create what's called return profiles. that stores many of your recent returns as well as personal information, possibly a driver's license number, date of birth, address, name, phone number. this is all, they say, to prevent fraud. the retail industry estimates it absorbed about $254 billion each year. they say some that get returned are either stolen or used. consumer advocates say this is goes a little too far in terms of violating privacy rights, especially because not all retailers are disclosing that they engage in this practice. it's tens of thousands of stores engaging in the practice. some of the big ones include best buy and also home depot. this did lead to a privacy lawsuit recently. that was tossed out in federal court. as
