and county of san francisco for launching the 2012 aging and disability technology summit. it was approximately a month ago that secretary kathleen sebelius said the u.s. department of health and human services announced the creation of this new federal agency, and that is the administration for community living. and in her words, she said "for too long, too many americans have faced the a possible choice between moving to an institution or living at home without the long-term services and support they need." so this new administration for community living will be to helping people with disabilities, as well as seniors, to live a productive, satisfying lives. now, as you may be aware, the aging and disability population has been recognized actually at the local and state levels for quite some time now. so the mechanisms for providing support that facility community living have been really brought together into local and state agencies such as the san francisco departments the of aging and adult services that serves those populations since the year 2000. yet, at the federal level, policy developments from a community outreach, and program implementation related to aging and disability service

[music] a little over 7 years ago i was sleeping underneath of a bridge on the streets for 19 years eating out of a trash can, going in and out of correctional and mental health systems. i racked up 83 arrest and 66 convictions all due to my substance abuse because i was trying to cope with the trauma that had happened in my life. and i would go in and out of prison, and they would say, "this is how you're going to spend the rest of your life, or you're going to die in the streets." once i was able to go to a program where my trauma was addressed, the tamar children program, my trauma was identified, addressed, and treated. i was able to change my belief system from "i am nothing" to "i am somebody," and i can be anything i want in this world. see, when my belief system changed, my thought process changed. and i started to make the best decisions based on me believing that i was worth a better life. dr. harris, let's focus a little bit on issues of trauma for children and youth. you've

and in that report, there was a, um a, goal, the first goal was to strengthen the psychological health of military service members, veterans, and their families. and so the department of health and human services, as a partner, basically, with the va and with the department of defense pledges to do whatever it can to support the psychological health of this population. so, samhsa has taken on the military service members, veterans, and their families as an initiative to focus specifically on the behavioral health issues for this population. and to insure that any individual who needs it has access to appropriate behavioral health services. and those services are what are considered to be evidenced-based practices that are focused on recovery. that includes the center for trauma? that is correct. and we have, we have a variety of resources with-in samhsa, we have a trauma initiative, we have, um, the center for trauma-informed care, we have, um, a focus on a, making sure that what we call recovery-oriented services are available through our community providers and through the states. so, samhsa is not, um, getting in the way either va or dod doing their appropriate mission. but we are

[music] westfield high school is located on the western part of the county by the dulles airport area in chantilly, virginia. we have approximately 2,750 students here. we do have a student services department here at westfield. it comprises of these school counselors. we have a school psychologist and school social worker. i kind of look at the counselors as always being the first line of defense. they want to make sure that kids in this school succeed, and they want to make sure you do your best at all things, even if they have to push you a little bit. what we try to do is be proactive, rather than reactionary. we sit down and talk every year about our programs and what we do here, to try to see how can we sort of more get ahead of the issues, rather than just reacting to 'em. some common issues that students face is peer pressure, especially with drugs and alcohol and all those things. and i think for mental health, it's more of a "we don't talk about it" mentality. it's hard to k
