[laughter] >>> if you have any questions about the fleet or how it's going down there at the wharf, we started our -- which is the first on the west coast -- the community fishing association 2-1/2 years ago with help from the port with the grant from the ocean protection council and some help from eco trust. and we started with 7 boats. what we do is we give our fishermen access to the hoist and access to market street. and i've been running this for these guys buying and selling all their fish. and then at the edv ~ end of the year we return through profit sharing all the profits of the business. the local fishermen love it and now we have 19 boats and still more people asking to join. we're able to put some of the most beautiful product on the market. we've been able to work with all the other processors. i think they were a little

in 1989 loma-prieta earthquake altered the timeline and cost for renewal of fisherman's wharf. pier 45 the planned location for seafood center suffered significant earthquake damage and chased away the last number of dwindling company doing fishing at the port. the cost skyrocketed and for a moment it seemed there may no longer be any fish at fisherman's wharf. undaunted, we began a $14 million earthv quake repair project at the wharf at pier 45 which when completed turned into dee cap it seismically pier into a receiving processing center. i can recall pundits at the time saying the industry was too far gone and it would never come back to san francisco. even if we fixed pier 45. luckily, when the facility opened in 1995, the receiving and processes and companies flocked back to fisherman's wharf and the sheds were unleashed to capacity almost immediately. today they remain at capacity with over 100,000 square feet of modern fish handling distribution space to 20 fish processors and receivers. it is today northern california's leading seafood center. the next infrastructure pro

i know they get it at the wharf. this activity at the wharf lasts throughout the morning.s the afternoon a preferes and visitors, tourists arrive, one could be fooled into thinking there's not much happening at the wharf. nothing could be further from the truth. today the port is a leading fishing industry center in san francisco bay and home to close to 20 fish processors and receivers in the 125 commercial fishing vessels and 14 sport fishing boats. according to the department of fish and wildlife, in 2011, 11 million pounds of seafood with a value of over $21 million was landed at the port of san francisco. pier 45 houses the largest concentration of fish processors of any port in california. 2011 economic impact study shows fishing industry creates over 1500 direct jobs which is great, but i'm fascinated with 50% of the jobs for san francisco residents.

the past year. brannon street wharf today. last june we had the privilege of opening up just up north jefferson street promenade. february earlier this year, we did the james cruise ship terminal, the cruise ship terminal at pier 27. of course, last november we all did a lot of great celebration just a little bit more south here at head park, 22 acres of open space. we're literally honoring our open space obligations and doing it the right way. this particular project is impressive not only for its beauty and opening up more space, but it does in a seismically safe way and in a sustainable way accommodate some 75 years of projected sea level lies for our city. and that's incredible because we always are having to pay attention to all of our environment around our city. we're three quarters the bay. and, so, that's a respectful thing. we do it on ocean beach. we do it on the long golden gate. our maritime. of course, here in our waterfront. it's all also about history, not just with otis redding iii, not with the 150 years here,

wharf. it has been somewhat silently decaying over time, and the fisherman's wharf's comment district had the thought they would like to replace it -- rene anytime -- oh you are ahead of me -- with something more durable but keep it -- it's always been in its iconic format if you will. fisherman's wharf community benefit district has been focused on a series of improvements and beautification as we know that the jefferson street public realm but also this great new crab wheel. the crab wheel is a little bit more environmentally friendly as well and it is now using led lighting. it's a near identical of the original crab wheel sign and it was completed by a company named arrow signs. it is constructed out of aluminum to avoid rust and durable materials and the new lighting is donated by general electric which is really terrific and we are really pleased about that, and i want to thank the community benefit district for coming forward with the projected and funded by the benefit district and the fisherman's wharf and the merchant's association and great collaborative work and get set up in time
