, small little office in san francisco, trying to better understand the community moving at a fast pace here. part of doing that is working with the city and better understanding how we can support open data. so, thank you. (applause) >> good morning, everybody. can you hear me? good morning and welcome to the hatchery. this is our newest space. my name is rajul pakash, i'm one of the founders. along with my other partners, chris and richy in the back, and lawrence who could not make it. welcome to 6 45 harrison and the hatchery. it's super exciting to have such a dynamic group of people from both the public and private sector here today. and as a self-proclaimed geek and tech entrepreneur, this is really exciting for me. before i wax on about that's correct really quickly want to give you just a quick 90-second thing about the hatchery. we opened our doors about a year ago at 625 2nd street, bought 21 thou square feet there. we opened our doors and within a year we've grown into a whole new space which we opened two months ago. * across both spaces we have about 135 companies and it's sort of awesome. they are not all tech. we sort of

this committee was put together so that we could better uf city and school district strategies on serving the same exact families. so i want to ensure that this committee remains a medium to do that. so i'm happy to bring this back over the next couple of years of the program to see what has been successful, what we can improve on and what we can model. i was talking to commissioner mendoza could this work in the tenderloin and excelsior, because if these are programs we can model we can bring to other areas with similar demographics. a couple other things i wanted to bring up is looking at surplus property in the mission within the boundary lines. i know 1950 mission is there and we looked at putting affordable housing on that site because we understand the opportunity gap is more than achievement gap in the classroom. one of those opportunities is housing. how can we be creative about the assets we do have in the school district family. rent is expensive in the city. we were at an eviction, unfortunately yesterday of a senior elderly couple and their daughter in china town. we know land

lot of money on social services in our city. ~ but why are these social services not impacting people's lives the way it's changing people's lives for the betterwant to make sure that we work with residents and we work to help them grow within public housing and to not be plitioned out of the city as a result. i think that's one of the big issues. the other issue is connecting people to job opportunities. long-term employment, stable employment, employment that gives people dignity, that gives them pride. i mean, everyone wants to take care of their family. and sadly, people are sometimes pushed into a life of crime because that's the easy route to obtaining money. i mean, it was really easy for me as a kid to choose to sell drugs because everyone around me was selling drugs. wasn't easy for me to get a job because i didn't have a lot of examples of people working other than my grandmother who was working as a maid, or other folks i saw working at the grocery store. so, for me i just felt like, okay, drugs is easier, you can easily go out on the corner and stand and sell drugs. but luckily, because of the mayor's youth employment and training

any high school student -- any high school teacher in the city would find it hard to count the number of students whose lives were made better by attending city college. those are the kids who went to a two-year school, could then go on to a four-year school. those are the students who lost their way, but through the second chance recovery programs found their way through city college. they're the lifelong learners, students who i've met 20 years later, students i taught at balboa high school who are now going to city college to learn new trades, new skills, to meditate, to lead a fuller life. secondly, it is scandalous, it is scandalous that the aajc, a rough faction of commissioners answerable to no one, has put this institution in threat. and it was curious to teachers in sfusd that a credentialling experience can do that to a campus. we used to go through a prudential process through the wasc. and they can be tough and they force you to do a lot of soul searching. but at the end of the day in the 25 years that i've taught in the district, a wasc experience is a healthy one that leads to a growing and better institution.

-- i mean, i don't see a better preparation than that for becoming a city supervisor.orld is a very challenging community to work in because of the fund-raising involved, because of the need for such great programs. so, to be in the middle of that and to advocate for an incredible community asset, to work with city departments, to attain funding, i mean the list goes on and on. so, over the years i've been fortunate to develop some incredible relationships with city department heads and other city commissioners who helped me to do some of the great work i've been able to do in the community. so, it's somewhat of a natural progression and i think all of that entails really helped me to be -- it's going to help me in my role as supervisor and it actually helped me get here. >> the district 5 race for supervisor was an especially eventful one this time around. what did you learn amidst all that controversy and all that competition? >> i think that what i learned is that we have an incredible district of people who can see what's genuine, who can see when someone really ca

city? so, i think we have to do a better job in making those connections. >> let's talk a little about the e of sports, the role of sports in the city's economic future. are you supportive of the plans for the new warriors stadium? >> i'm supportive of a plan that includes the residents of this city. specifically, with the warrior stadium, i think it could be a great opportunity for san francisco. but i want to make sure that in the agreement that there are some requirements that make sure that people are not just employed for construction opportunities. they're employed for management opportunities, they're employed for concession opportunities, they're employed with the warriors team. i mean, there's a whole 'nother franchise of opportunities that exists as a result of this particular team. and who are they going after, what folks are they mentoring, or what are -- who are the people that are going to be long-term working with the establishment? and, so, i'm more interested in what the long-term relationship is between the warriors and the community, and not just we're going to build a st

we are better as a city.s on tuesday night as bill de blasio was talking to a crowd after receiving a little over 40% of the vote as it stands, which if it holds he would avoid a runoff and would be the democratic nominee for the mayor of new york in this november's race. he is now live with me in the studio, the present public advocate for the city of new york and the presume democratic nominee, bill de blasio. assuming the numbers hold up. let me start there. will there be a runoff, mr. de blasio? >> rev, i think the numbers will be consistent throughout the count and we will break that 40% number. a lot of folks in the democratic party are calling for unity, which i appreciate. but the bottom line is we're going to keep talking to the people of this city about where we need to go, the changes we need to make, the break from the bloomberg years, the need for a progressive vision for new york city. i'm going to keep doing that until all of the numbers are resolved in the next few days. >> have you talked to

as a city, we need to do much better at creating an environment where we have more jobs and economic velopment. we are also extremely challenge in our public transit. we talk about being a transit first city, but everyone has had the experience of sitting in gridlock, waiting for the bus, trying to hail that tab, walking on pedestrian sidewalks that are not particularly safe. as a city, we need to do more to invest in the first-class transportation system. >> what are some of the biggest issues facing your district? >> in addition to the local economy that impacts the merchant corridors, to many vacant storefronts, transit issues, in every neighborhood we're having a real conversation about how we change, whether we should preserve aspects of the important characters of our neighborhood or think about building new things. there is also a real discussion we're having in many neighborhoods about affordability. i hear from too many tenants in the process of being evicted, homeowners being foreclosed on. we need to think about how all of us can continue to live in a city where the whole w

city's economic development. are we on the right track? what would you like to change about the approach to developing the economy? >> we are getting better. the city as got more proactive about attracting businesses and new industries and providing incentives for them to come and stay here. it is still a very expensive place to do business in terms of the cost of labor, land. we need to make sure that we are not taxing businesses to the point that it is not profitable and we are not attractive for them to be here. we need to reform our payroll tax. that is an incentive not to create jobs. i know the board president david chu is working on possibility this there -- possibilities there. i look forward to working with him. we've targeted efforts to revitalize areas and bring industries here with the tax holiday and proposal introduced yesterday relating to parts of the tenderloin to provide some payroll tax relief to encourage businesses like twitter and others to go there. >> the governor has proposed eliminating funding for redevelopment agencies. what is your opinion of the plan? what are your thoughts on the value of redevelopment agenc

city contracts. in the past, those would be awarded mostly to non-san francisco businesses. san francisco needs to do a better job of cultivating business innovation. we need to be the city that competes with silicon valley to attract clean tech, biotech companies. we can do a better job of nurturing creative industries. we need to create a better economy for our local artists. this is a city that has many thousands of small businesses. as someone who used to run a small business, the city can do a much better job of nurturing that sector. that is part of the life blood of who we are as san franciscans. >> we could do better. are we on the right track? >> i think we are in a transition right now. we have an interim mayor and a new board of supervisors. i do think we have a new tone at city hall to move things forward. we have a lot of challenges we are facing. i am doing everything i can to put us back on track. >> let's talk about the role of sports in the city's economic future. are you happy with the plans for the america's cup? >> i have been a huge fan of the america's cup. i am proud of this board came

better. in my city because of the earthquake the embark freeway is gone. now the service retrofit of today's bay bridge will insure that when the next massive earthquake hits our infrastructure will withstand that. it serves as ingenuity and it will help us. as we say thank you to the contractors and the engineers, the men and women in our labor force and their representatives and as they go on to other bridges, other transportation projects like bart extensions as we say goodbye and as their role becomes less visible and as they go into comfortably and maintaining it we say hello again to the california highway patrol to the men and women who work in the san francisco police departments who along every single day will work with caltrans to welcome in all of the commuters to make sure they're safe and to certainly make sure that bicyclists are safe as well on our bridge. in closings our heart feel congratulations to everyone. it's an exciting day for san francisco and for oakland and for the bay area as what we celebrate the bay bridge. and now, please all
