dr. janice orlowski from medstar was treating a patient when she heard the news. >> one of the nurses came in and said there is a shooting at the navy yard. >> reporter: hours later the frustration she expressed struck a chord across the country. >> i would like you to put my trauma center out of business. i really would. i would like to not be an expert on gunshots. >> i heard a police officer being interviewed. he said americans are going to have to get used to more mass killings. you know what? i refuse to believe that's our future. >> reporter: for dr. orlowski who spent two years at a chicago hospital before coming to d.c. this morning's shooting was personal. horrifying she called it. you have 32 years on the front lines of gun violence like this. how do we fix it? >> we have to talk. we can't just point at washington. we have to talk as a community. we have to talk about what we are going to do for mental health. what do we do for individuals in crisis. >> reporter: even on this week-day afternoon, new arrivals including a stabbing victim shot in the past 14 h times. >> it is exhaus

dr. janice orlowski is the chief medical center of the medstar hospital in washington, d.c., which deals with lots of gunshot injuries all the time. the doctor there making an emotional plea about this latest mass shooting in our country today. as washington hospital center was one of several area hospitals called on to treat the two dozen casualties of today's mass shooting. again, the death toll at this hour for the navy yard shooting stands at 12, plus the shooter himself, for a total of 13. the number of injured at this hour stands at 14. police say the apparent shooter did die at the scene today, but they are still looking for another person who was seen on surveillance camera footage. we do not know what this person was seen doing on the footage that made law enforcement want to speak with him, but he is described as a black male in his 40s with gray sideburns wearing an olive drab military-style uniform. joining us now is nbc news justice correspondent pete williams. pete, thanks for being with us. what can you tell us about that second individual who police say they want to quest

dr. janice orlowski, the chief medical officer of washington hospital center. i'm here to give you an update regarding the tragedy in the nation's capital. we are currently have received three gunshot victims and we are in the process right now are caring for them. one is in the operating room already, another will be going to the operating room shortly. we have been in discussion with individuals who are at the scene. we understand that there are still more victims and we are not sure as yet how many individuals will be coming to our hospital. those that have come to the trauma bay are alert. they're responsive. they're able to talk to us. they do have severe injuries. but we've been able to speak with all of them. they have not been able to give us any information regarding what happened to them. obviously they're in pain and in distress because of what they suffered this morning. we will have more information later, but i chose to come out and talk to you at this time so that you'd have an opportunity to hear what we know as of right now. >> can you confirm
