here's kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks to explain.d morning. >> reporter: good morning. of course, apple did center a nice runup going up to the iphone announcement but now that wall street has gotten to see what apple is selling, not as impressed as they were hoping for. part of that is that the 5c that you're looking at there with the colorful cases isn't as cheap as they were expecting. the un-contract, the contract- free version going for $549 in the u.s. and a website in asia reporting that it will cost equivalent of $735 in china. investors are hoping for a lot cheaper iphone to be able to combat all the other alternatives out there and gain more. emerging market share. and as far as the 5s is concerned, the premium version, a lot of investors are hoping for a larger screen to better compete with samsung. as a result, apple shares are plunging right now. they are falling by 4.5%. >>> mortgage refi applications are dropping quite a bit. the mortgage bankers association says refi apps at the lowest level since june 2009 with risin

here to talk about it kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks. >> reporter: good morning. a big shake-up for the blue chips this morning. hewlett-packard, alcoa and bank of america are being booted out of the dow and they are being replaced by foster city-based visa, along with nike and goldman sachs. the dow jones indices says the companies leaving are -- because they have low stock prices and they wanted better representations of other industrial sectors in the 30-stock index. hhp joined dow in 1997 replacing texaco. >>> apple is key for today. just a few hours from debuting two new iphones in cupertino. lots of keys for investors. how cheap will that 5c iphone be? there will be a partnership announcement with china mobile? right now apple shares are down by 1% in the early going. overall stocks doing well for the second straight day. this on some relief and hopes that syria will indeed give up its chemical weapons stockpiles in order to avoid a u.s. military strike. let's check the big board now. the dow is up 69 points. nasdaq is gaining about 14. s&p is up 7 points. h

dow up 110. >> thank you, kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks. >>> developing news in berkeley a man dying in an early-morning fire in an apartment building. 56-year-old andrew goodwin was found on the third floor. he was taken to alta bates medical center, where he later died. goodwin was a professor of media studies at usf and author of a well regarded book on music television. the fire in berkeley was first reported at 1:40 this morning and firefighters found the third floor engulfed in flames. 7 other people were able to get out safely from the building on oregon street near telegraph avenue. none of those people was hurt, but they are now without a home. >> they just are -- i'm very sad. this is a really great neighborhood to me and i love living here. and i don't know now what's next, though. >> it took about 30 minutes to get the two-alarm fire under control. there's heavy damage to the top floor plus water damage on lower levels. the cause is still under investigation. >>> threatening all of us with his firearm. >> the man acquitted of killing teenager trayvon martin is

kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks joins us on this wednesday.reporter: some good economic news to start the day off. the commerce department reports that durable goods orders in august rebounded after a terrible july. up .1%. they were down over 8% the month before. core capital goods which is a key gauge for business investment and things like computers, machinery, up 1.5% after a big drop the prior month. automakers continue to do well. their orders up 2.4% the biggest gain in six months. amazon is launching some new tablets. the kindle fire hdx a refresh of the current line-up. the 7" and 8.9" versions will not only be thinner but they will also be faster, better resolution. they will also include a new feature, window can pop up on the screen where a live customer service rep will be there to answer any issues that you may have. amazon also refreshing the old hd and will lessen that price down to $139. stock market has been stuck in a four session losing skid. a lot of concerns about the gridlock in washington that could force a potential go

here's kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks. tomorrow i guess the big day, right?nly is. good morning. big deal down in cupertino tomorrow. apple is going to launch their newest iphone. expected to launch two different models. the 5s which will be its premium model and the 5c which is expected to be a budget iphone especially intended for overseas customers and the "wall street journal" says that apple will strike a partnership with china mobile, that's critical because it's biggest wireless carrier in china. the other big question facing apple according to investors is the pricing on the 5c. just how cheap will it be? all things digital projects $400 to $500. some think it could be as cheap as $300 out the door. apple stock is rising. that's helping out the over at tech sector on the iphone anticipation. google is also making news this morning. it's submitting its latest proposal to european regulators to try and settle an ongoing antitrust case over its search practices. rivals claiming it tends to favor its own services and products. the regulators turned down a

here to chat is kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks on a friday.g. >> reporter: good morning, frank. good morning, michelle. that sounds good on the surface at least. commerce department reporting that consumer spending in august was up three-tenths of a percent. that was a bit stronger than july. incomes meanwhile up 4/10ths of a percent. also stronger than in july the biggest gain in incomes in six months and clearly something we need to see as the economy continues to lurch forward between slowdowns and occasional rises. we are getting word from all things d that the next ceo of microsoft could be the current ceo of ford. that may sound like a strange juxtaposition going from a carmaker to a software giant but mulally already did it. he was the top executive at boeing when he moved to detroit and ford and helped lead that company in a turnaround. ford avoiding the big bailouts that general motors and chrysler needed. there are several other candidates at play, as well. but mulally knows microsoft well given his experience in seattle. we snapped

let's check in with kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks on this friday. >> reporter: frank, if there's one thing that wall street and main street hates, it's uncertainty. that's what we have with the budget deadlock in washington, d.c. that could force that government shutdown. that's led to several off days for the stock market. there's a lot at stake here. consumers in the latest university of michigan consumer sentiment survey had three times as many negative looks on government policy as they just did a couple of months ago because of this. that impacts consumer spending. of course, businesses are uncertain about the future plans. that could constrain hiring and investment plans. as a result, you're seeing stocks fall off quite a bit. once again, it's another day of selling. right now the dow is down by more than 90 points. the nasdaq is giving up 11. the s&p is down by 9 points. this won't be getting better anytime soon until there's some resolution over the federal budget. back to you, frank. >> okay, jason brooks. thanks. >>> the father of the suspect accused of killi

here now is kcbs radio's financial reporter jason br.et' impact >>> the big issue for wall street today the fight over a bill. >> jason brooks, financial reporter. the market does not like stuff like this. >> good morning to you and michelle. wall street in a very much selling mood right now. we saw that with the impending federal government shut down. now that we're at that moment, market is taking a turn south. investors hate nothing more than uncertainty. we're looking at a lot of people that aren't going to get their checks. a lot of people that are going to be out of work. heading into the most critical quarter of the year for retailers. consumer spending makes up two thirds of the economy. also there's uncertainty over what this will do to hiring plans. a lot of businesses out there will hold back on some of those plans if this becomes a prolonged situation. does hurt business investment overall. going to be a rough day for the stock market. also this could impact ipos. when the market starts looking shaky like this, companies coul

kcbs, our sister station, is at the airport this morning. >> reporter: few details have been released. a large fire and collapsed roof have made it difficult for first responders and investigators. shortly after landing the jet veered off the run way and crashed into the hanger. the tail is the only recognizable wreckage. residents nearby reported loud explosions. the fire intensified by jet fuel caused the roof to fall in. >> no survivors are in that plaechblt it was impossible to get in the hanger. >> reporter: officials are unable to determine how many were on board. the fire caused the hang tore collapse. during the heat, the sheet metal wrapped around the plane. it's incasing it. to get that off is going to take a while. >> reporter: early this morning, firefighters were able to contain the blaze. ntsb officials are on the ground but have not been able to access the wreckage. the plane's soern a 63-year-old man from maliu. it's unclear if he was piloting the plane or even on board. >> and we're just getting pictures from outside chicago where two commuter trains collided at oak p
