we want to see people return to their full potential: physically, spiritually, socially, emotionally, relationally, and every way transformed and made whole, so that they can contribute to society as they were designed to do. some people come to teen challenge to say, "i want to get off drugs," but that is really just the tip of the iceberg, because at teen challenge, we don't just deal with getting off drugs. we believe that men and women who come to teen challenge become new people. we believe that there's an inner change that takes place in a person's life. when a person comes in, and they understand that our approach and our philosophy is that everyone is in need of recovery, it takes down some of the defensiveness, so they recognize, "ok, i need recovery in this area, but i'm not alone." and i think the isolation of addiction really causes young people not to move on to accessing recovery and receiving fully the benefit of what recovery has to offer. when i first got to teen challenge, i had committed to a week. i thought anybody could do anything for a week. what made me stay wa

a common element with people from 18 to 25 is the peer pressure, and what we offer through the social model at teen challenge is how to have true friends that can bring a positive influence to each other, those that are willing to say, "you know what: i realize i can't go back to those old friends. i'm going to find new friends." they're able to make that change. i think the thing that i like the most was the relationships that i built, actually having true friends and a safe place where i could be so broken and completely myself. so, the relationship component, an aspect of it, is very, very important, not only with the peer-to-peer person who's helping them through the program, but also having a relationship with god. experiencing god's love can change a person's life, and then we watch people who learn to love themselves. then they understand the freedom of god's forgiveness, and then we learn to forgive ourselves. teen challenge has saved my life. i came through jail with no hope, and i was able to find hope in teen challenge. i was able to learn about god and how much he loved me

it reminds of the term "social justice". we think we know what we mean by it but i can't tell you the emails i get from individuals. >> if "if you don't get me in the school i want to you're denying me social justice" and it's usurping of the teerm and let's call bullying what it is and assault and make it clear to what it is and make it clear to other individuals and there are other grades and issues of classroom management and it's okay and let's get focused and ready to go on the lesson, but when you're talking about hurting somebody's feelings that is often times in my experience been an issue of power. >> yeah, i would like to add to that. i think there has been dialogue in the nation throughout the issue in the last year, and when you look at recent report that the federal department of education presented basically has the definition of bullying in every single state and also a list of i think 37 components and ranks that show you state by state which ones include those components of it. as we heard earlier the federa

networks, and they talk about that socialization and that integration and independence, you know, and they start to strive for that independence, and what we've learned as a culture: we're extending adolescence, and so now adolescence is definitely 25, 30 almost. but that being said, the hopeful outcome and the goal of that adolescent period is to establish and build independence. and that inevitably means that they're going to build social networks and peer networks that the family isn't necessarily connected to. and the hope and goal from a recovery standpoint is that you can build an environment, a peer group-an alternative peer group, so to speak-that can have a positive impact and supportive impact on a young adult in need of recovery, whether it be mental illness, whether it be substance abuse, whatever the issues are. and i think we see a growing trend in regards to this millennial generation in seeking a supportive kind of relationship with each other. i think, you know, the bullying campaigns have done immense work in regards to helping move forward into a supportive kind of
