only added 148,000 jobs last month. that's 45,000 fewer than we added in august, and that is worrying because we should be adding between 150,000 to 200 that's or more a month to sustain our economic recovery. we're just not doing that. look at the trend it suggests that job creation in america may be slowing. by the way, that's without factoring in the jobs lost or furloughed because of the recent government shutdown. we're going to get that information in the next jobs report in early november. so why would the unemployment number come down when hiring is also slowing? well, that's because of this. this is a much more important number. this is the labor force participation rate and remains at 62.3%. this is the all americans who are looking for work. that's the lowest since 1978. one problem is people who want a job have given up looking. so they're not counted in the unemployment rate. they're in that area over here. now some of these people are retirees. they're students, stay-at-home mom and dads, fabulously wealth
