with me tonight in the studio, blackfish director gabriella. former president of the alliance of the marine mammal parks. orca biologist rose. and jack hanna, host of jack hanna's into the wild. welcome all of you. jack, i'm going to start with you. i know for the last hour and a half we have been listening to a specific perspective. let me get your thoughts on what you think of this film. >> well, obviously the film is emotional. having had the honor, i guess you could say, to lead dawn to memorial at seaworld shortly after her death, i've been going to seaworld since 1973. you talk about the term we use at other waterparks and places like seaworld, aquariums and zoos. it touches the heart to teach the minds. i live by that. i've alwaysed lived by that. did this documentary touch our hearts? it did. what is on the video in the past 30 # or 40 years was on the video there. but the people i can tell you now that work at seaworld from the ceos to the trainers down to the people that serve the food are all people that love the animals just as much

here's a clip from blackfish. >> he's not killing because he's just crazy.ling because he doesn't know what he's doing. he's killing because he's frustrated, and he's got aggravations, and he doesn't know how to -- he has no outlet for it. >> now tilikum is spending a great deal of time by himself and basically floating lifeless in a spool. >> three hours now and he hasn't moved. >> naomi, that's a very strong contention, because we're almost implying there's a motive, there's a reason here. tilikum is a murderer. he's a killer because he's driven to this. do you buy into that? >> no, i think what was said is he's not a murder. he's just acting out. we're very fragile compared to them. and unfortunately when they act out like that out of frustration, somebody is injured or dies. the problem here is the way they interact with the animals, the trainers are put at risk. they come to understanding as with elephants, protective contact is the only way to keep them safe. >> do you think there's a way -- >> the only way to keep them safe is through protected contac

"blackfish" premiering tonight. congratulations on that. and you decided to make this film. why this film and why this topic? what drew you to it? >> i'm a documentary film maker by trade. yes, i'm a mom who actually took her kids to seaworld so i'm not an animal activist. i started making this film because i heard about the death of a trainer who was killed by a killer whale in 2010 at seaworld orlando. and for me that was koun confusing. i heard she slipped and fell. it was her ponytail. it was question after question, and basically i thought to myself, i have this many questions, i'm sure everybody else will. >> at the time when you start delving into a topic, the trite cliche, there are more questions than answers. did you find that to be the case when you started to uncover more and more facts? >> no question at all. basically 40 years of secrecy, seaworld has gone on for 40 years or so, and none of this stuff has been unearthed. one question led to another. the first one being, oh, my gosh, he had killed two people before killing dawn

those are the questions being asked in a new cnn film that premieres tonight called "blackfish".nada in search of answers. >> reporter: cullen baird grew up in vancouver island. he started working at a marine park called sea land in the pacific. >> i would go after school, weekends, growing up, and just thought that's how everybody grew up. >> reporter: sea land of the pacific used to be here, where this marina is now. there's nothing left of the old place. it was an ocean arium. there were nets that separated the animals, the seals, sea lions and the stars, the killer whales. baird eventually became a trainer, working with the three killer whales. his favorite, a small male named tilikum. >> he was very easy to work with. he was very easygoing. learned quickly, learned well. >> reporter: among the other trainers, 20-year-old marine biology student kelty burn. she had just finished a show with the killer whales when she slipped and fell into their enclosure. >> they were a little surprised one of their trainers had seemingly jumped into the pool, although fallen. they were sort o

sea world was hit with negative press after the tragedy, including the revealing documentary "blackfish." after the incident, the labor department fined the company and demanded it separate whales from trainers during performances. now -- the company is appealing, stating that a work safety clause under the "occupational safety health administration." cannot be used to force a company to change the very product that it offers the public. sea world stock is trading near $30. wine lovers and vinyard owners are toasting to a very good year. just as linus describes the great pumpkin rising each halloween, so too are the prices of pumpkins this year. ---about 20-cents higher for an average retail pumpkin or about four dollars and 80-cents. the reason--uneven weather. the wet spring during germination threw rain on pumpkin reproduction in vermont. while drought from massachusetts to the upper midwest during much of the growing season left a lotta lil' pumpkins....lil' pumpkins. just as linus describes the great pumpkin rising each halloween, so too are the prices of pumpkins this year. ---abo
