congresswoman gabbert is on the phone. congresswoman, what have you been told? think we've lost our connection. we'll work to get that. luke, are you -- are you there, congresswoman? >> i am here. sorry about that. >> that's all right. can you tell me what you've been told so far? >> here in my office in the cannon building, i was about to walk out the door. the alarm started sounding and we were told by capitol police to shelter in place. right now we're just trying to track down and make sure all of our staff is okay and that they have taken cover. we don't know many more details now. we're listening as things unfold. the main thing we're being told is to shelter in place and for anyone who's near the capitol outside to take cover. >> have you heard from any of your staffers who were not in the office at the time but may have, like our own luke russert, heard gunfire or seen some of the activity? >> we did -- one person was near the raburn building. they heard the shots were fired and saw the capitol police responding with their own weapons pulled. beyond that

. >> we spoke with congresswoman gabbert, who said that security, despite the shutdown, was pretty much status quo. there were some entrances that were closed, but at least from what she sees day to day and going into work, we know that the capitol police were also still working despite the shutdown as well. but, you know, michael, you were a part of our coverage certainly september 16th when aaron alexis took the lives of 12 people at the navy yard shooting there. that is not in a distant memory in our minds. that is very near. when you hear something like that, we instantly have that deep take a breath moment of fear. i can't imagine having been there. >> sure. i can tell you i was up on the hill just yesterday. various entrances to the house office buildings were closed, and the security personnel who would normally be there were not. so at least, you know, from my own visual impact, it looked like clearly there has been some draw down. whether or not that relates to what's going on here is, you know, far too speculative at this point. >> michael, thank you. let's go back to kelly o'

i think we have one congresswoman from hawaii right now, chelsea gabbert joining us. are you there?> yes, i'm here. >> tell us where you are and what you saw, what you heard. >> i'm here in my office, about to walk out the door when one of my members of my staff came running in and started locking the doors and the windows. her fiance, who is working in the raburn building, had said he had heard some shots fired and saw capitol police running down the street with their weapons pulled. the announcement over the loud speakers came out telling everyone from capitol police to shelter in place, and if outside, to take cover. so we've got most of the team here in the office across the street from the capitol right now, and folks who are not in the office, everyone is safe and is in a safe place. >> you're on the house side, which is all the way on the other side of the u.s. capitol from the senate side, but what you're saying is that whole area on the house side of the u.s. capitol is shut down as well, is that right, congresswoman? >> it has been shut down. i did not personally hear any
