he was kind of out of favor in new york. just people didn't -- they thought he was too realistic, the natural kind of style that he had, and so he moved to new hampshire, he continued to write, but he wasn't here having things produced. but anyway, this play, he kind of worked on it and called it the old friends, and then in the early '80s he was back working. he used to do -- worked with herbert berghof a lot, who had a theater -- has a theater down in the village, and they did a kind of a workshop production of it. wasn't reviewed or anything, but then we had a reading of it that jim houghton at signature theatre put together, and betty and i did the reading, in 2002 or 2001? >> 2001. >> and my father saw it and went in and sort of re-wrote the play. >> really? >> yeah. he did a massive edit on it, and that's the play we're sort of -- you're seeing today. >> betty, you're from texas. the play is set in texas. are the people down in texas really as vicious as these people in the play? >> well, i've said this in a couple of i

the same is true in l.a., but we are talking about new york. there clearly have been people equal to the task. the aforementioned bill thompson is one of them. there are others who did not seek the office. patterson once ran for lieutenant governor of new york and 161 out of 62 counties. mayor undera deputy ed koch. there are just a number of people that have not sought the office. in 88, you may recall that jesse did better than any other second place candidate. those persons that we got registered voted for me in 1989. it was a four-way race. the metropolitan transit authority. the most articulate and knowledgeable person i have ever encountered. the conventional wisdom was that we would not win. you have to get 40% to avoid a runoff. election, general 9/11 has not yet occurred. a margin of only 50,000. >> to what do you attribute that? my response was always, why do you ask? the answer, i believe, is racism. we lost by about the same margin in 1990. in the book i mentioned racism, but that is not the total reason. in 1989 if have one a lot o

we're looking at tax mess in new york state. how bad is it? according to a new report, new york is the worst in the country. front-runner, bill deblaso wins the race. they will be in for more taxes, this should worry everyone, what happens on wall street trickles down to main street. jack, you know, this has been around for a long time, you think of new york city, weathered the recession fairly well. idea that people would be motivate the by politics to this degree is shocking. >> now is the time to grow our economy, not shut it down, to attract or jobs, if deblasio wins he's to raise taxes that is bad for small, main street, it means people will not bring their capital or jobs to new york city. iiwant to lower capital gains in new york city to attract the jobs. charles: people in new york city it makes someone making a hundred grand saying i am not making enough for what is being taken out of my pocket. what do you make of the idea that people who are doing well feel like they are victimized? >> right now, in new york city, we have to focus on

do the things that you want only exist in new york city with a lot of -- >> as i'm going to cross this city talking to people over the last year, the profound sense of crisis, you know, you just need to talk to new yorkers for a few minutes to start to realize something different is going on now. people feel economically insecure. they know their children are not being prepared for the future. and they feel that government has to address it. i think the combination of saying, we will take this challenge on head on, you're not going to sweep it under a rug, we have to focus on early childhood education if we expect to address the needs of this city and the state and one. and second, that the weldy are now surpassing their previous status and look at the state of the stock market. they're setting records recently, all-time highs. it is fair to ask the wealthy to do a little more. you look at for example some of the polling about this election that we're having here in new york city, striking of number of independents and republicans agree with some of the ideas that i'm putting forward.
